Japan Journal Project! (Pt.I)

I took so many pictures when I got a change to visiting Japan last year (March 2012). I love taking pictures with many kinds objects and trying different kind angles (not a pro tho). I just wanna trying to make it artistically, so i decided to make this.

Still on progress.. 

These are some sketches of mine when i was making a design concept for Japanese World 2011. A Japanese Festival that held by Japanese Studies Department of Airlangga University, Surabaya. This annual event held in 2011 for the first time, and the theme was 'Japanese Mythology' at that time. The things that popped up on my mind was black and white, simple but have some details inside, mystical but sharp.

M: Ngapain?

B: Sini sini dulu, bantuin..

M: laa iya ngapain?

B: Ini low ada yang gak ngerti

M: Apanya?

B: Ini low tempat tanggal lahir

M: lah yaudah isi aja

B: gimana?

M: hhah?

B: laa iya ini low tanggal lahir nya aku ngerti, tapi tempatnya? tempatnya dimana? ak lahirnya di rumah sakit kan..

I just found a few of vintage advertising from the June 1969 edition of "Reader's Digest". And.. I found it that vintage ads have a unique characteristic that very popular at that time. The pictures, diction, the way they advertise their products. I found it very interesting.

Hey guys! I just found out a few pieces of paper that i used to make some concepts for some events on my campus. I like to doing some sketch when making a concepts for any artwork (though sometimes it’s getting nowhere). Doing a little research, pick some keywords and then browse it. I just have to convince myself what i’m going to make, what will it be, and what they want for sure (of course at any event they have their own theme), and then put it all together.

The first time finally i can explore my things and share it with the other (on my campus) was on the event called “Kinenbi 2010 – Osaka 808”. This is an annually event that held by my department (Japanese Department-Unair). We’re doing some contests for high-school student and Japanese Culture Festival. At this time, the theme was “Osaka 808”. Why Osaka? And why it’s 808? Well, Osaka is being the sister-city with Surabaya (placed where i live), and ‘808’ refers to bridge planning project that made by the government of Osaka. They planning on build a big number of bridges in Osaka, and 808 means a big number for them. So.. we wanted to brought the atmosphere of Osaka to Surabaya. 

It’s kind a mixture of Japan (Osaka) and Surabaya. I putted the Surabaya’s symbols which are the shark (Sura: in Javenese) and alligator (baya: in Javanese). And then i made such a long road, which means some kind a journey to the Osaka, hehe.. some identical things of Japan, like waves, torii (traditional Japanese gate, mostly found at the entrance of Shinto shrine), cherry blossom, crane (origami shape), bridges (that refers Osaka), and crab (well-connected with Osaka cause they very rich in it).

These skecthes later used for publication purpose for the event. Pamphlet, brochure, poster, and project proposal for sponsorship purpose.

Through a long time of editing process, finally those sketches going to be like this..

On the left side, used for the cover of proposal project (sponsorship purpose). And on the other side is the poster of the event. I have just realized that i made a big mistake on that (-__- ;)

again.. trying another different style of comic book effect, and i remind u once again, still.. amateur.. :P

wanna using some different kind of facial expression actually..but i found it really hard in reality, haha (idk why i'm so lack of expression. flat. "_ _)
