Maybe it's just because I'm jaded by seeing "itadakimasu" translated a thousand different times in a thousand different ways. But I'm really starting to feel like it's one of those words that is better left untranslated.
Like. We don't "translate" rendezvous. Or zeitgeist. Or fucking sushi.
Why can't itadakimasu be treated the same way? Especially considering the translation never actually conveys the appropriate meaning. It's basically the equivalent of saying grace before a meal, all condensed down into a single word. It's an expression of gratitude for the food as a thoughtless cultural norm. It certainly doesn't mean "I'll give it a try" or "rub a dub dub thanks for the grub" or any of the other stupid fucking things people write in the subtitles for it.
