I think if I was a landlord reliant on indentured labor, and born of the sort of culture that made me a landlord, that would piss me off. I would feel a rather strong impulse to destroy those people, I think. Because that's sort of the basic European impulse for control. Incredible violence and cruelty. Peace through power. Might makes right.

And then you set on the floor some more and think about how one of the driving impulses of the American Revolution was chafing at the requirement to uphold the King's Peace, and not go pillaging further into the West.

And you set there and you think about what Freedom really means in this historical context. What it meant to those English Gentlemen and the Americans that would make up their progeny.

That's Rhonda, Louie's wife. High school sweetheart. About five years ago, I was covering a night shift and he came in feeling talkative. Born and raised in Pittsburgh. Lifelong Steelers fan. Groundskeeper at Three Rivers Stadium until 1998. He never really wanted kids. But Rhonda wore him down, and when she finally got pregnant, he changed his tune, he got excited. And then, about a month before the baby was due, Rhonda and the baby were killed in a car crash. Louie never really came back from that. May his memory be a blessing.
