hey losers 2016 is almost upon us and all of us are still on here (kidding youre not losers), so that means a language new year challenge! feel free to follow it but if you do please tag it as #afny please thanks. this will be tagged as #AFNYORIGINAL for reference. if youre not advanced enough to do something, try to do as simple of a form as possible. if you cant think of a simple form, send me an ask. also, if you feel like it, include an english translation. i wanna read what youre saying (otherwise ill google translate it). and yes i kNOW this is like speutchlish's but they havent been very active lately but if theres a problem w me doing this what u do each day is following:

I read ‘Die weiße Schlange’ and below there is a summary of the plot and a list of vocabulary that I learned.
Zusammenfassung des Märchen ‘Die Weiße Schlange”
Der König hielt eine weiße Schlange in einer Schüssel. Eines Tages nahm ein Diener die Schüssel und aß ein Stückchen der Schlange. Danach konnte er verstehen, was Tiere sagen. Der Königin fehlte ein ihrer Ringe. Der Diener kam in Verdacht, ihn gestohlen zu haben. Der Diener hörte das Gespräch einiger Enten zu und fand heraus, dass eine der Enten den Ring geschluckt hatte.
Der Diener brachte den Koch dazu, die Ente zu schlachten und auszunehmen. Sie fanden den Ring in der Ente. Der König freute sich über die Rückgabe des Rings und erlaubte den Diener, ihm um einen Gefallen zu bitten. Der Diener bat um ein Pferd und Geld, weil er reisen wollte. Während er auf Reisen war, rettete er das Leben von drei Fischen, einigen Ameisen und einigen jungen Raben. Sie alle versprachen, ihm es zu vergelten. Der Diener kam in eine große Stadt an und fand heraus, dass die Prinzessin einen Gemahl suche. Um der Gemahl der Prinzessin zu werden, musste man drei schwierige Aufgaben ausführen und wenn man scheitert, wird man getötet. Der Diener entschloss sich, zu versuchen, die Aufgaben auszuführen. Er war erfolgreich, weil die Tiere, die er früher rettete, halfen ihm. Die Prinzessin und er heirateten und erreichten ein hohes Alter.

languagestudybuddy challenged everyone to write at least 500 words in their target language about the holiday season. (Original Challenge Post) I decided to write a short story in German set on the 25th of December. It is 680 words long and I have put it under the ‘Continue Reading’ link.
I posted all of it on lang-8.com and received corrections, so hopefully all the major errors have been corrected. Any corrections, criticisms or suggestions for improvement would be very much appreciated.

Part One: Pick a fairy tale
Ich habe mir das Märchen “Die weißeSchlange“ ausgesucht. Ich habe mir dieses ausgesucht, weil ich ein Märchen lesen wollte, mit dem ich mich nicht auskenne. Ich habe viele Märchen der Brüder Grimm gelesen. Ich habe die Inhaltsübersicht des Märchen „Die weiße Schlange“ gelesen und ich habe gedacht, dass es interessant geschienen hat.
fractured fairy tale (noun): a story that uses fairy tales you know and then changes the characters, the setting, points of view, and/or plots.
Hello ladies and gents’, nonbinary people, and everyone in-between. Today, I’m going to tell a magnificent story, full of twists and turns, heroes and villains, temptations and problems and solutions–yours.
…Well, I lied. I’m not telling the story, you are! And it’s, well, technically your story? If I tell you, will you accept my quest?
Your task is divided into three crucial parts:
1) Pick a fairy tale. (Due Friday the 5th)
Your instructions here are quite clear. Pick a fairy tale, whether that be your favorite fairy tale, or one from your country/country of your target language (to find one from a specific country: click here). Then, using the tag #affft (# a f f f t ), write 1-5 sentences about why you chose that particular tale. Write as much of it as possible in a target language of your choice.
Basically, tag both #affft and #affft(yourlanguage’snameinENGLISH) so natives and other learners can find what you are writing. Plus, depending on how big the project gets, I may or may not use this side blog to post the parts of your journeys, which also involves easier access. So tag your entries.

2) Read said fairy tale. (Due Friday the 12th)
Again, an easy instruction: read the damn book. As a challenge (aka: do this), try reading it in the same language of your choice. See what you understand! Afterwards, keep note of the plot and write a summary of it in the same language for the #affft tag. If you read it in your target language, write a vocab list of words you learned after the summary. Same tagging rules apply as last time.
3) (The fun part!) Write your fractured fairy tale. (Due Tuesday the 22nd)
If you don”t understand this part, read the definition again. But, to go into more detail: Take your chosen Fairy Tale and write your own fractured fairy tale.Change the point of view (who is narrating), the setting, the plot, the characters….you name it. Change part of the story make it yours, and when you’re done, post it! Try and make it in your target language.
If you’re still confused, here are some fractured fairy tales:
Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Goldilocks
Another example is that version of Little Red Riding Hood where they”re all spies.

After reaping the advantages of speaking practice through making videos here on tumblr, but becoming frustrated with how hard it is to think of topics to talk about in these videos, @corbinstudies and I created the Weekly Speaking Challenge.
We’ll be posting a topic to speak about each Thursday/Friday/Saturday (depending on time zones) and everyone is invited to try their speaking skills in a video to share with the rest of the language community! Natives are welcome to make vocabulary lists when each topic comes out, which learners can incorporate into their videos. The videos can be as long or short as you like, and feel free to ask for corrections and tips from native speakers in your description. You can also ask that people don’t give you corrections, if that’s what you’d prefer. Of course, feel free to participate whenever you want, and not participate whenever you want! There are no conditions, and the more people that participate, the better!
We think this will be a great way for people to develop not only their speaking skills, but also their confidence. Hopefully, this can also help people that want to progress in or practice their target language(s), but aren’t sure how.
We will be posting the first week’s topic very soon! We hope you’ll join us!

I always get these verbs mixed up, so I’ve listed them together with their definition and an example sentence.
Festhalten – to hold onto, to grasp firmly
- Ich habe sie am Arm festgehalten.
Festlegen – to set, determine, lay down
- Wir sollten uns auf eine Strategie festlegen.
Festnehmen – to be arrested
- Die Polizei konnte den Dieb schnell finden und festnehmen.
Festsetzen - to set, determine
- Der Abgabetermin wird auf den 1. Juni festgesetzt.
Festsitzen – to be stranded/stuck/ trapped
- Wir sitzen immer hier fest.
Feststehen – to be certain/to be fixed
- Viel weißt du nicht. Das steht fest.
Feststellen – to establish, to find out
- Die Kommission konnte keine Unregelmäßigkeiten bei der Wahl feststellen.
German WOTD day seven: ohne Unterlass. This little phrase means incessantly or unceasingly in English - and a useful sentence to go with it is: Es regnet ohne Unterlass. (It’s raining nonstop.)

He proposed to her - Er hat ihr einen Heiratsantrag gemacht.
jdm. einfallen - to occur to sb./ to come into sb.’s mind/ to cross sb’s mind
