ICAS Africa Conference 2014: Animal Liberation in Africa
The second Institute for Critical Animal Studies Conference in Africa will be held on the 20th and 21st of September at UCT in Cape Town. Registration from 08.45, starting 09.10
The broad aim of this conference is to bring together academics, activists and anyone else wishing to know more about Critical Animal Studies. Specifically, we are interested in exploring the tension – and providing a meaningful encounter between – animal rights/animal liberation and the broader African and South African context within which it is situated. An important question the conference aims to engage is whether, in the face of the endemic violence and stark inequalities that define South Africa in 2014, there is space for animal rights/animal liberation activism: how can we create an inclusionary space for AR/AL that accounts for broader social struggles?
The conference will take the form of presentations of research, special lectures and special interest presentations with discussion groups.
