It was quiet in its own unruly way. The bonfire in the center of the makeshift camp crackled like it had secrets to tell, sparks leaping upward and dying mid-air. The Straw Hats had landed on some coastal island, some where tucked deep in a cove. It was peaceful, nothing but vegetation and sea song washing up on the shore. It was a no-brainer that everyone needed a break and so, there they were. The crew lounged at various points around it, loud as ever, clumsy with drink and laughter. Usopp was telling a story far too exaggerated to be true and Zoro was loudly denying he’d fallen asleep standing up again. Nami and Chopper called him a horse for that, laughing their wits off. Of course, that made Sanji immediately crack up since it was an insult against his nemesis but it was overall their usual mess. Robin and Franky sat near each other, drinks in their hands as they watched Brook sing some sailor song, wobbling all around. They were incredibly and undeniably drunk.
You sat a little ways from the worst of the chaos, knees hugged loosely to your chest. Your body rested with a blanket over your shoulders, a cup of sake in one of your hands and a book in the other. Even from here, the wind tasted of the sea and woodsmoke.
Luffy had plopped himself down beside you minutes ago, cross-legged, grinning wide as if the night were his to command. He seemed energized by the late hour, blinking up at the stars like they were old friends. For a while he’d been silent, at least in his own way. There were periods where he would laugh at Chopper from afar, his finger pointing at whatever foolish thing the young deer was doing. If it wasn’t that, he would munch on a snack he snuck off the ship and poked the sand with a stick, drawing shapes without purpose. His hat was tilted back off his head, that carefree expression softening around the edges in the firelight. Then, suddenly, that's when he said it.
“Sanji said something weird today.”
“Sanji always says something weird,” you responded, your head nodding as you flipped a page of your book with your pinkie, to make sure to not spill your drink. Your tone was flat, essentially disinterested. Your eyes didn’t leave the pages of the book you were reading, your brain simply wanted to turn off and indulge in the smallest hobby you had on this pirate crew. You prayed for some silence, but that was apparently too much to ask as a Straw Hat pirate.
“No, no this was really weird.” Luffy wrinkled his nose, thinking hard. Your eyes flickered to the sand he was messing with. Little circles and triangles, poorly scribbled in the earth.
“He was talking about being hungry for a kiss.” That surely did it for you. That caught your attention. You snapped your head to your right, your eyes meeting Luffy’s wide ones. You choked on air, a laugh wanting to emerge because that was simply ridiculous. Of course Sanji would say something like that, he was always talking about wanting to kiss someone. You were amused for a moment but you got confused on why he was even saying that. There was some naivety in his expression, like he was not fully understanding what he was even saying to you.
“He looked all..dramatic about it. He said something stupid 'about being starved'. So, I asked him how you can be hungry for a kiss when you can’t even eat it, and he just yelled and called me hopeless!” Luffy waved both hands in an overdone swoop, trying to imitate Sanji’s romantic theatrics. You hated to admit it, but it definitely seemed like something Sanji would do. You laughed at him trying to make sense of what the cook told him. It was almost adorable.
Luffy huffed and looked at you, his expression just in a mix of annoyance and disbelief. It was like that little thing really got to him because of how silly it sounded, and you just couldn’t believe how shocked Luffy was. Another laugh left your lips, soft and warm as you shut your book to a close. With a short swig of your drink, you squinted and passed your cup to Luffy, offering your beverage to him.
“Sanji’s just a little pervy. Ignore half of what he says,” You managed out as the burning sensation from the sake travelled down your throat. Your hand shooed towards him, as if you were trying to get the thoughts out of his head. Luffy tilted his head and shrugged, one hand grabbing the drink you handed him and the other back to making circles in the sand in front of the both of you.
“Yeah, but it made me curious anyway,”
“Curious about what?” you asked, your head resting against your knees. Normally, you would have simply walked away at this point with Luffy but the sounds of the sea were calming you. You felt so warm and cozy, you nearly felt like you could have fallen asleep on the warm sand.
“Kissin’,” He said it like he was naming a type of fish he’d learned existed only moments ago. “I never had one. Not even once.” He took the final gulp of the drink you handed him, his breath deep with satisfaction.
He wasn’t usually curious about things that didn’t involve food, fighting, or treasure. You turned and found him watching the fire, not embarrassed, just thoughtful. Your eyes slightly widened despite yourself. Of course he hadn’t. Luffy’s world was so direct that romance never lingered long enough to catch him. He only had one goal: to be The King of The Pirates and find the One Piece. It made sense, startling as it was to hear aloud.
You just sat there, looking at him not truly knowing what to say to that. You simply told him to forget about it, that it was just Sanji being Sanji. You continued to lay your head on your knees and eventually, you felt yourself doze off. You needed to say something but you were so tired and the silence that threaded between you was delicate and fluttering. Then Luffy turned fully toward you.
“Hey. Can we kiss?” Your breath caught and your eyes jolted wide open. Those doe like eyes stared at you with a normalcy that was shocking, like he didn’t just say the most absurd thing. You raised your head, your thoughts flustered from your exhaustion and embarrassment from his question.
“What-Luffy, why? That was so sudden.”
“Why not? You’re right here.” He shrugged, as if you’d asked him why the sky was dark at night. You looked over your shoulder instinctively.
The rest of the crew was absolutely useless at this point: Chopper dancing on top of a log, Robin smiling at everyone like an indulgent older sister, Usopp trying to climb Zoro for some reason. None of them were paying attention and, for once, you wished they were so you could get out of this awkward mess. You glanced over at the man next you, a feeling bubbling in your chest. It was a heat that trailed to your cheeks and your ears. The last time you kissed someone was before you left your island to be part of the crew. It wasn’t anything serious but it was the last sincere kiss you shared with someone in a while.
‘There is no way he is serious’ you thought but the more you looked at him, the more you started to realize that he was being sincere. His eyes blinked at you, waiting for a response to his request. Maybe it was the sake you had been drinking or the desperate desire to want to go to sleep, you reluctantly sat up. You sighed, heat gathering under your skin. He truly was a hopeless idiot but you kind of felt sad for him. Everyone deserves to have at least one kiss in their life.
“You..really want to?” You asked. You couldn’t believe you were opening yourself to the opportunity. It wasn't like you hadn't eyed him before, you definitely found Luffy attractive. But the thought of actually kissing him wasn't something that was on your radar. His grin grew and his head nodded. Luffy was sunlight trapped in human form, so bright that even the most ridiculous request seemed doable.
“Isn’t it supposed to be fun?” He spoke of this as if it was supposed to be some kind of game.
“It’s supposed to be special,” you muttered, cheeks burning. “And you’re laughing at me.”
He was laughing, so loudly his shoulders shook. That's all you needed to know that Luffy, in fact, had no type of understanding of the implications that kissing had on people. You shook your head in disbelief and huffed out a flat ‘fine’.
Luffy sobered enough to nod, though giggles still flickered at the edges of his voice. He scooted in front of you, sitting cross-legged, trying to imitate the seriousness he’d seen in others. It didn’t entirely work because every few seconds he snickered. Your heart fluttered like a flag in a sudden wind. You stared at him, his smile large but tight lipped. With plenty of hesitation, you leaned in. It was just a small tilt forward, barely a breath of distance between you as you pressed your lips to his in the softest possible kiss. A fleeting touch. It was shy and incredibly quick. When you pulled back, Luffy made a face. You raised your brow at him, crossing your arms over your own chest.
“That’s it?” he murmured. “I don’t feel hungry at all. Maybe you just suck at kissing?” He tapped his chin. Your mouth fell open and your hands gave him a swift slap. It was a series of bickerments between you two, all the time, but this time you truly felt embarrassed.
“I do not suck at kissing!” You insisted, your words were dripping with a mixture of bashfulness and hurt. He laughed again, falling back onto his hands, head thrown back.
“You should have seen your face, you got all flustered!”
“Because you’re being impossible.” You slapped his arm again, this time it was so hard it stung your hand. Mentally, you were making a note to not do something this stupid for Luffy ever again. He was childish and there didn’t seem to be a point in feeling bad for someone who radiated immaturity.
Still laughing, Luffy sat up. “Okay, okay. Let’s try again.”
Before you had time to protest, before you even inhaled, he leaned in and kissed you. This one wasn’t delicate nor was it cautious. Luffy kissed you like he captained everything he did: with bold, thoughtless certainty. His lips pressed to yours firmly, warm with the heat of the bonfire and the night. He lingered a moment longer than you expected. When he pulled back, his gaze flicked to your lips, thoughtful. “Your mouth tastes like…Fruit? I dunno,”
You blinked at him, barely able to speak, because your pulse was still thundering at the suddenness of it all. Your lips stung of the sake that he drank just moments before, tasting it slightly as your tongue touched your inner lip. Luffy had always been clingy and touching you wasn't out of the ordinary, but the way he was looking at you in this moment was so different. You were taken aback by his sudden forwardness and assertiveness. There was a difference to him when he stayed only a few inches away from your face, like he was inspecting something. Concentration was the only word that came to your mind. His thumb found its way to your lower lip, slightly pulling down the skin.
“Whatever it is, It’s good,” he chuckled out lowly, almost to himself. Then, with a smile, he leaned in again but only this time, you met him halfway. You opened your lips just slightly, leading in a simple locking of the lips. The kiss deepened, sloppy, wet and slow at first. It was as if he wanted to take his time to understand this feeling but your stomach flipped all over. He had no idea what he was doing even though he was trying to lead. Luckily, you knew how to work around his mess, eventually taking the lead. One of his hands braced in the sand near your knee, his breath warm against your skin, and the other one grabbed the side of your face. There was an earnestness to him, a bright, innocent curiosity that made the kiss feel like some small, miraculous discovery. You felt the warmth of him roll through you, sinking deeper than the fire’s glow. Then somewhere behind you, a shout went up.
“WHAT THE HELL!?” Usopp’s voice shattered the quiet like a poorly aimed firework. You and Luffy broke apart in surprise. You flicked your head towards the bonfire, your face felt like it was on fire. Across the flames, the entire crew had frozen mid-chaos. The crew swarmed with a series of cheering, hooting, and teasing. Just a result of a night that only got more interesting. And beside you, Luffy grinned, wide and proud. A tidal wave of reactions crashed toward you, to which you covered your face with both hands as your blush reached catastrophic levels.
This cannot be happening right now.
“Why are you all yellin?” Luffy blinked at them, baffled. Only he would react as if you two weren’t just making out in front of everyone. You knew it was incredibly stupid and yet, your heart had gotten the better of you.
“See?” he said softly over the commotion, nudging your shoulder.
“I get Sanji now. Kissing is fun!”

The night eventually thinned into something quieter. The bonfire guttered low, the embers soft and pulsing like the last heartbeat of a dragon settling into sleep. One by one, the crew toppled their way back to the ship to go reside in their sleeping quarters. Even the most determined drinkers surrendered to exhaustion, sprawled across blankets. You tried to sleep, you really did, but you just could not after all of that. You kept replaying the situation over and over in your head: the kiss, the crew’s faces, it all burned into the back of your skull.
You slipped out of your quarters once their noise dissolved into snores and murmured dreams. The sea breeze brushed your face, cooling the lingering heat on your skin. You told yourself you only wanted water. Something grounding. Something not shaped like the memory of Luffy’s mouth on yours. You shook your head as if you were dealing with the worst hangover ever. Except, it was simply just feeling like a complete degenerate. You couldn’t come to terms with the fact that you liked kissing him.
Just the thought of kissing Luffy truly made you hot. You padded toward the kitchen, expecting solitude and silence. Instead, as you stepped inside, the dark stirred. You quickly turned on the lights and saw him again. Luffy was leaning against the counter, his mouth full of some snack he managed to get his hands on. He looked like a racoon being caught in an act he wasn’t supposed to be in. He swallowed hard and placed his fingers in front of his lips, almost like he was telling you not to say anything. Sanji would kill him.
You rolled your eyes and walked to the kitchen sink to grab your glass of water, your body stiff with awkwardness. You filled the cup, taking a long drink, letting the cool water steady the race of your pulse. But when you lowered the cup into the sink and turned around, Luffy was already moving toward you. He came closer with that effortless confidence he carried everywhere- headfirst, certain, never second-guessing a thing. He stopped just in front of you, close enough that his warmth drifted across your skin.
“What?” You choked out, your body stepped back instinctively. Your lower back hit the counter, making a soft thud against your clothes. He leaned over, his smile just as big and gummy as usual as his hands rested on the behind you. You were practically pinned and the way he was looking at you, you could have sworn he was eyeing a snack. “What are you doing?”
“Imma kiss you again, duh!” Luffy chuckled, trying to lean against your lips but your hand shot up to your mouth. He stopped briefly, tilting his head. Your face was flushed at this point, the coolness of the water that was in your system was essentially useless.
“That’s not-Luffy, you can’t just decide we’re going to kiss again!” Disbelief flooded over you because he was viewing this as such a casual thing, not a single drop of a flushed hue coating his cheeks. How could he not be flustered over this and how was he this bold to even attempt something like that again? His eyes widened innocently, the corners of his mouth perching to the side in disappointment.
“Because kissing isn’t-” You flailed one hand. “-something you just do whenever you feel like it!” He stared at you for what felt like a lifetime, a hum fluttering from his lips. It was as if you saw the gears working in his head and you kind of imagined if smoke was going to spout from his ears since he was thinking so hard.
“But I liked it. And you kissed me first so,” he added matter-of-factly.
“I-I only did that because you asked!”
“Yeah, but now I know I like it,”
You shut your eyes for a moment, trying to gather your thoughts that were scattering like startled birds. It felt like there was a bundle of bees in your chest with how fast your heart was pounding. You looked at him, carefully, because you didn’t know how to explain how this wasn’t something you two should indulge in.
“Luffy… listen,” You began, your throat dry. “Earlier already caused enough chaos. The crew is going to make a huge deal about this. And randomly asking me to make out in the middle of the night is a bad idea.”
“I wanna kiss you again. Like the second time,” He inched closer, practically touching his forehead against yours. No acknowledgement of what you told him, and that was so like him. He didn’t see it as a bad idea and he was making that clear. Luffy’s voice softened just a fraction, honest and nearly raw. Your mouth went dry and your lips quivered slightly because you saw the glimmer in his eyes staring right at your lips.
“I don’t get all that stuff you said,” he went on, slightly waving one hand vaguely. “About something special and embarrassing or whatever. I’m not good at thinking about that kind of stuff.” He pointed at your chest. “You are.”
His hand hovered near your waist. Not touching, but close enough that it stirred warmth along your skin. Then he kissed you again, setting fire to the heat that was boiling in your stomach. No hesitation. No warning. Just Luffy being Luffy: direct, fearless, and completely certain of what he wanted.
His lips met yours with a confidence he hadn’t shown earlier. Testing the connection with a few gentle pecks, before getting firmer as he adjusted to the rhythm of your breath. He kissed you like he was discovering something new, something exciting, the same way he reacted to strange islands or unusual creatures. Your fingers curled into the edge fabric of his shirt before you even meant to. His body pressed closer, warmth blooming everywhere he touched. He made a soft noise in his throat, low and satisfied, when you kissed him back. He pulled back only a fraction, noses brushing.
“You taste good, Like… I dunno. Somethin’ good.” he said, voice a bit breathless. A genuine note of wonder flickered through his tone. You could barely breathe, your eyes only being able to focus on his lips.
“Chapstick,” You huffed out, your face burned. “It’s just my chapstick.”
“Ohhhh.” He blinked. “I like it, keep wearing that,”
A tiny laugh escaped you before you could stop it. You just couldn’t understand him, no matter how hard you tried. No one, including you, could predict him. He was always thinking more than he let on, harder some days than others. For this particular moment, there were no thoughts but impulse.
“See? You like it too!” He grinned, triumphant. Even though his face wasn’t as red as yours, he loved watching you squirm. Luffy loved winning fights and he knew he was winning this one with you.
“I wanna do it again,” he said simply. “So I’m gonna. Because I’m the captain. My way goes.”
Your heartbeat tripped, you were practically a hot mess. Breath staggered, exhausted, but beneath it was wanting. He kissed you again. This one was hungrier. Not in Sanji’s dramatic, poetic sense but in Luffy’s pure, uncomplicated way. Hungry the way he always was for anything that thrilled him, anything that sparked adventure. Hungry in a way that pulled you in helplessly. Your back pressed to the sink even more, causing you to let out a small gasp. A hand finally settled at your waist, like a latch that was warm and firm, fingers curling as if he was anchoring himself to the moment. His other hand braced beside your head, steady and strong. Because he meant it when he said he was going to do it. He always got his way and you wanted to let him.
Especially when he was hungry.
