Nullified Chapter 10
TW: Blood and Gore
Ray felt like a complete idiot. He had seen a good portion of the net for someone his age, bouncing from system to system- nine to be exact. Each school it was the same thing; no friends. Despite his hardest efforts he always managed to say or do the wrong thing. Although he was well traveled, there was no wisdom gained from the journey, only endless blunders.ย
Ray pulled the keytool out of his pocket and began fiddling with it again. A finger traced its smooth edge as his mind wandered. He had been walking for a while and still hadnโt caught up to Dot. Ray pushed the same button he tried before. He knew it wouldnโt do anything, but needed a distraction.ย
He wished he could turn back time and not screw up the party, or get in a fight with Enzo earlier that day. In fact he wished he hadnโt accidentally hurt AndrAIa. โWho am I kidding? Sheโs never going to like me.โ Ray sighed.
โMaybe I am just a jerk.โ He thought out loud. If every sprite he met hated him, then maybe he was the problem afterall.
ย Suddenly the interface lit up and the device gave a soft click. Ray froze. After a few seconds the gear on the outside turned. A word appeared on the screen: โGLITCHโ.
โGlitch?โ
The device chirped happily.
โIs that your name?โ
Before Glitch could respond a scream echoed down the hall, rushing towards them. Ray jumped, not expecting the sudden noise. It came from up ahead, where Dot was.
โDot?โ He called.
He was met with silence.
Slowly he returned the keytool to his pocket, eyes glued ahead. He swallowed, waiting hopefully for a reply. None came.
โDot!โ He yelled louder and with more urgency.ย
Hisย mind pivoted sharply to the story AndrAIa had told him. Maybe the wall they broke down was more important than he thought. Perhaps it wasn't to keep nosey students out, but to ensure something sinister stayed trapped insideโฆ
He smiled, shaking off any fears. The flimsy drywall wouldnโt have been enough to keep a monster locked away. It was just an old section of the school and nothing more. Dot had already pranked him once, and it was Halloween after all. She had to be pissed about his fight with Enzo; she was just trying to get some payback.
Ray kept walking, skateboard in hand, this time suspiciously eyeing every closed door along the way. Dot was probably waiting to jump out and scare him.
โYou know this isnโt funny!โ
Silence.
Ray continued until he met something a little more troubling than one of Dotโs pranks; a dead end. He had reached the end of the hall and hadnโt crossed paths with her.
He turned, looking back from where he came. There was no way she could have turned back without him seeing her, which meant that she had to be in one of the rooms. Ray held his breath and listened closely as he started tip-toing back. If she was hiding somewhere she was bound to make a noise.
Ray had managed to advance only a few meters when he heard shuffling to his left. A door stood slightly ajar. He sighed, seeing it as a clear set up for her antics. Regardless, he took the bait. He even decided he was going to pretend to be scared to satisfy her need to torture him. After what he did to Enzo, he may have deserved it.
โDot, are you in there?โ He said, practically announcing his arrival.
He dropped his board by the door and walked in. Even though the lights in the hallway had turned on, the room was dark. It looked like a storage room from what he could see. Rayโs hand found the lightswitch and flicked it on and off a few times. There was no change. Maybe the bulbs were dead. A chuckle escaped him, not intimidated at all by the darkness ahead of him. He simply pulled out his phone, shining a light ahead.ย
As he went deeper into the room he looked around at the shelves. Stacks of printer paper, pencils and other classroom supplies were neatly stacked. The room wasnโt very large so he made it to the back of the first aisle pretty quickly. He pivoted and started walking down the next. His flashlight illuminated the cluttered shelves around him, dragging shadows in their wake. Surprisingly no cobwebs hug dormant, merely dust, which dulled the shine of any light.ย
ย Ray had almost travelled the whole room when a strange noise sent a shiver down his spine. It was a moan. The voice was soft, but burdened, like someone in pain.
โDot?โ Ray turned down the last aisle, pointing his light towards the end. There was a table with a few old printers sitting on top. Underneath he could see purpleโฆ The same purple Dot had been wearing.
As he got closer he froze, hands trembling. It was in fact Dot curled in a ball, but not all of her. She slowly reached out towards him with a quivering limb. Her heavy breathing was kept in time by the steady dripping of blood from her outstretched hand. Crimson glinted back at him, running from every orifice of her body. As she opened her mouth another moan escaped, along with a trickling of blood. It hit the floor with an underwhelming splash, breaking the rhythm. The way her lips moved almost mimicked the shaping of words, like she was trying to say something.ย
โTh-th-this is-isnโt funny.โ Ray barely managed to choke out. He didnโt have to put on an act or pretend like her plan was working; he was afraid. There was something about her jerky movements, the blood, the sounds escaping her, that made him go cold. This was far more elaborate than the dark robes from before.ย
Dot responded by crawling towards him, dragging her torso out just enough for him to see where she had been severed. Her legs were gone, nowhere in sight. As she inched closer Ray backed away, keeping a necessary distance between them. Desperately he tried to rationalize in his mind how she was pulling off something that looked so real.
After a few more laborious movements she stopped trying to reach him. Ray watched, because that was all he could manage to do. Dot's violet eyes rolled back, revealing nothing but glossy whites with enlarged veins. She opened her mouth once again, this time letting out a blood curdling scream. It was a sound Ray had never heard before. The noises she made should not have come from any sprite. As the high pitched shrieks continued Ray covered his ears, dropping his phone in the process. The beam of light danced sporadically around the room, revealing just enough for Ray to understand what was happening. Dot's skin morphed and folded, as she began to turn to something new- something unnatural. She became more compact, smaller, and lost all distinguishing features. Bones broke, chunks of hair fell to the floor.ย
Her physical body and energy devolved into something small and slug-like. The only resemblance to Dot it had was the colouring. The green thing slowly slithered out of her clothes, daring to get too close to Ray. It was then that his instincts took hold, even before the shock had time to wear off.
Ray turned and ran, barely remembering to scoop up his skateboard before barrelling down the hall. The sprite picked up enough speed and dropped the board, skating faster than he had ever gone before. Ray didnโt look back. He didnโt have to in order to know what he had just witnessed. The image was forever burned into his mind. Dot had just been nullified.
to be continued...
A/N: Moving forward things are going to be getting a bit darker (as this was intended to be a Halloween special). So I will be leaning more into the horror aspect. There will be blood, gore and character deaths moving forward.
