So my friend became and uncle and...
...I'm still just a graduate student.
Today I joked to my students that Dionysus is the god of wine and Spring Break... and they actually laughed, to my surprise
The Gods View of Humans
âThe lord of distant archery, Apollo, answered:
"Lord of earthquake, sound of mind you could not call me if I strove with you for the sake of mortals, poor things that they are. Ephemeral as the flamelike budding leaves, men flourish on the ripe wheat of the grainland, then in spiritless age they waste and die.â

Greek Tragedy
Everyone knows that Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides were considered the best tragedians of Ancient Greece. They wrote, choreographed, directed, produced, and composed original music for about three masterpieces per year.
BUT WHAT IF they were really just the most skilled choreographers/composers of their day, and some other tragedian wrote way better lines? We only read them, after all. We could never capture the original experience of watching a tragedy in the Theatre of Dionysus...
My favorite little toxic staller
TIL that when Aemilius Paullus won the Third Macedonian War for the Romans at the Battle of Pydna, all he took for himself from the spoils was the royal library of Perseus, King of Macedonia.
How I feel when I recite the opening of the Iliad in Greek from memory to my Latin students

Anacreontea 21, or, Alone on a Saturday Night
the black earth drinks,
and the trees drink it.
the sea drinks the breezes,
and the moon drinks the sun.
so why do you fight with me, friends,
when I just want to drink?

"Yeah but video games are a waste of ti-"
This is The Name of The Wind. Buy it.
The Name of The Wind is my book suggestion of the year. I read it about six months ago and Iâm still thinking about it. It is the best book I have read in years, fantasy or otherwise.Â
The Name of The Wind needs to be the next book you read. And the next book after that, I can guarantee, will be the second in the Kingkiller Chronicles âThe Wise Manâs Fear.â
I am a Harry Potter fan, you probably are a Harry Potter fan as well. But, in the years since you read Harry Potter, youâve grown up a bit. This is the book that Harry Potter fans have been looking for. Itâs not a book for Harry Potter fansâŚitâs just a book that I think people who loved Harry Potter and are now in their 20s or 30s would REALLY REALLY ENJOY.
I bought this book because I was in the book store and I tweeted âBOOK SUGGESTIONS PLEASEâ and about 12 people suggested it. I am so thankful to those 12 people.Â
The world is so deep, the stakes are so high, the characters so real, the mysteries so magical, the magic so mysterious, the plot so twistyâŚevery day you havenât read it is a day in your life that could be better.Â
I do not take this review lightlyâŚbuy this book. Buy it now. On Amazon or, preferably, at your local book store.
If you love The Name of The Wind, reblog.
Poulnabrone Dolmen, Ireland
Poulnabrone Dolmen (meaning âhole of the quern stonesâ) is a portal tomb in the Burren, County Clare, Ireland, dating back to the Neolithic period, probably between 4200 and 2900Â BC.
The dolmen consists of a twelve-foot, thin, slab-like, tabular capstone supported by two slender portal stones, which support the capstone 1.8Â m (6Â ft) from the ground, creating a chamber in a 9Â m (30Â ft) low cairn. The cairn helped stabilize the tomb chamber, and would have been no higher during the Neolithic. The entrance faces north and is crossed by a low sill stone.

What is man?
Mind clothed in flesh, a vessel containing a spirit, a receptacle for sense-perception, a toil-ridden spirit, a temporary dwelling place, a phantom in the mirror of time, Fortune's plaything, a good thing that does not last, one of life's expenditures, an exile from life, a deserter of the light, something that earth will reclaim, a corpse forever.
-Â Secundus, the Silent Philosopher, by anon (c. 100s CE; trans. Ben E. Perry)
Secundus took a vow of silence when some bad shit went down earlier in his life. He meets with the emperor Hadrian who, having heard of Secundus' great wisdom, fails to convince him to speak, even under threat of death. Â Hadrian then submits a series a series of written questions to Secundus. Secundus' answers consist of mostly 2 word definitions (in Greek). I'll be posting more in the coming days.
