yea, he’s loud and eccentric and cheerful and jolly and sometimes seems a little “dumb” in the eyes of others. but we know for a fact that wrecker is not dumb at all. he knows how to work with all kinds of explosives. that needs a lot of knowledge of how they work, programming, rerouting, and a lot of other things. wrecker knows how to work with machines and the software around him well enough that it’s obvious he’s not stupid. he can be “act first think later” a lot of times, but that doesn’t mean he’s stupid. he is a smart man, just in his own way.

at this point we all know he’s the most emotionally mature out of the group. which means he knows that everyone else has a lot of emotional baggage and struggles. and with their entire background (being bred and raised as products for war, being made to be DIFFERENT than all the other clones, being seen as “other” not just because they’re clones but because they’re defective, being sent out to war and that being all they know, etc), it makes sense that he would thus act in a way to help pick the others up. he’s the backbone of the group. he’s always lifting them up, cheering them on, routing for their accomplishments, making them laugh, encouraging them to go on. he’s ridiculously stubborn and always pushes for what’s best for the individuals, a little less so about the mission. i think that sometimes he plays a little dumb more so to diffuse the tension of a situation, make it so his brothers feel that they can breathe a bit easier.

of course he’s a bit immature at times. of course he has room for growth (which we do see, as i’ve talked about before). part of his character is that he is the muscle, not the brains. but he isn’t dumb. he’s just smart in a different way! i wouldn’t exactly call it a front, but a lot of his character is “a bit much” because he’s picking up the emotional needs of the team.

Do you think about how the first thing Hunter does upon waking up from a dream about how to be a good person is set his blaster to kill and go defend his family?

Do you think about how much more strongly he reacts to threats to his position as the leader/protector than he does to threats to his own life?

Do you think about how his first thought upon realizing he might not make it out of a situation alive is “Hunter couldn’t bear the thought of being a liability to his family. A risk to himself was more than acceptable. One for the others he would not allow”?

Do you think about how the character with whom he identifies most closely is a woman who was groomed and abused and dehumanized into a weapon until she can’t stand to be called her given name and thinks of herself only in terms of what she can do to right her past wrongs and save her family from her own fate?

Crosshair : *disbelieving stare*

lots of other examples throughout season 1 and 2, and even in the sanctuary book apparently (i haven’t read it yet but i’ve seen bits and snippets), where wrecker listens to hunter pretty much no matter what. sure he’ll do a little bro complaint or something, but he trusts and respects hunter completely. if he tells him to do something, he’s going to do it.

then season 2 finale happens. and in season 3, we see that actually change.

Echo has recovered from Skako Minor a bit by the time Order 66 happens. it's kind of subtle since he remains thinner than the regs, but there absolutely is a difference if you put it side by side like this
