The door was open and shut more quickly than she was accustomed to, and Miu startled from her pitiful sleep in delirium, eyes adjusting to the sight of them.
āKaitoā¦ā Her voice creaked as she forced herself upright, breath catching and a hand flying to her side as she tried to support herself. Through labored breaths a weary, fragile smile emerged. He didnāt look to be in terrible shape: maybe slightly disheveled, butā¦not hurt.
Shuichi hadnāt needed to hurt him. Hot shame flushed her cheeks as envy stirred her heart, and not even necessarily for the physical aspect of what that meant.
Her eyes drifted to Shuichiās set and stony face. She longed to feel his hand on her cheek again, and her voice got away from her, panting around his name, feeling it roll across her tongue like sheād bitten into a capsule of ink and couldnāt do anything but drink its poison.
His name was all she managed, but she hoped itād prompt him to speak to her, to give her heart something to hold onto.
āI, ahh, hnh-ā The pain was great, and though she longed to bridge the distance, to beg for his touch, it seemed itād have to wait until she was moved.Ā āI-Iāll do anything-Iāll do what you say-ā
Please, Iāll prove myself, Iāll do it, her eyes pleaded.
Shuichi took note of Kaitoās wide-eyed hesitation and breathed out, more to steady himself than anything, but also relief in that Miu was⦠alive, and no worse than before. Delirium pulled the inner workings, clearly, but this wasnāt much different than before.
All the same, he hated to see it.
His original idea had been to have her walk with Kaito as a support, but heād begun to doubt whether that was possibleāshe was enfeebled and always did seem to have trouble keeping her legs locked tight beneath her. Right now, he really could just assume she had none of the abilityā¦
āā¦Youāre going to have to pick her up.ā He couldnāt keep the flux of worry from his voice, not in front of these two.Ā āIāll help with getting her situated in your arms. And Miu, stay silent when weāre in the hallways. Thatās an order.ā A dash of a hard look at her and he could only hope she recognized the threat.
Now came the hardest part of this ordeal. LiftingĀ her. He moved behind her, pulling her upright fully with her shoulders, and then scooping his arm beneath her to lift her. Nobody would expect him, especially malnourished as he was now, to manage thisābut he did all the same with a grunt of effort. His body protested a little, but it was more of a passing dizziness that he refused to acknowledge.Ā āAlright.ā He was ready to move her into Kaitoās arms.
It took some dusting away at the cobwebs of his mind to fully recognize the fragile and broken woman before them as the Miu Iruma heād known so long ago. Even once he could piece together the broken picture frame and see the similarities, his gut violently refused--how could the loudmouth and haughty inventor be reduced to...
But no, sheād always had this weak spot within her; assertions of authority had a way of reducing her to a whimpering mess, so with Shuichi how he was now, Kaito could clearly see how she was mentally overpowered.
Before he could respond to Shuichiās assertion of the task before them, the other had already stepped forward and decidedly scooped Miu up into his arms. Worried about her falling, Kaito hurried forward as well, hands ducking down underneath to receive the pass. He was relieved when she was easily passed to him; it seemed that he mightāve overreacted, but it was better safe than sorry.
Once she was in his arms, her degraded state made itself even more evident. Her skin was pale and cold, despite the flush in her cheeks. Her clothes were soiled and her body covered in grime. She whimpered as she was moved, face twisting in pain; his heart clenched.
He chose not to comment on her state, instead focusing on keeping her steady in his arms, as to not cause her any sudden additional pain. She wasnāt heavy, or at least, wasnāt at a weight where she would overburden his body. He felt confident in his ability to carefully transport her.
He decided to give her some comfort before the trip back to Shuichiās office-bedroom began.Ā āDonāt worry, weāll patch you up. Just hang tight and the paināll be over soon.ā
