gabe somehow, always knew the right things to say. just easing her into the situation, and never breaking his word. even saying how he would be okay with just staying friends….a thought that never even crossed her mind. could they stay just friends? could they just pretend none of it happened….it might’ve been easier if it weren’t last night. if they didn’t go as far as they did. but they did. and she knew there was no turning back on that. they would always have that night, for just them. and she couldn’t turn back….and yet she didn’t want to. “gabe..” she started to say…but she she was quickly interrupted by gabe eating a fry way too fast. “oh my god! you’re gonna burn your tongue off!” she couldn’t help but laugh out loud, as she watched him suck his drink feverishly. “okay now you’re gonna get a brain freeze. slow down.” heather shook her head, taking the milkshake away. “kermit the frog by the way.” she laughed again, taking a sip of his milkshake. “you could’ve quoted anyone from plato, socrates, even shakespeare to sound philosphical…and yet you quoted kermit the frog.” classic gabe, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. “gabe, i could pretend none of this happened…but that’s not fair. to either of us. i keep replaying all of last night in my head..and i can’t just push that aside.” she said, as she timidly sliding her hand over his leg. “that’s gonna be between us. it’s never going away. and yeah, it scares me, but it scares me even more that i won’t have you at all.” it didn’t even occur to heather that her hand was placed on his knee, and moving dangerously high. “oh shit, sorry!” she burst into a fit of giggles, and leaned her head on his chest. “you make me so….excited. But scared.” she laughed, before looking into his eyes. she got that weird knot in her stomach, just like right before last nigt happened. “what made you wait so long to kiss me? you and i had best friends for forever, what made you….i don’t know. make a move? i know i can be pushy and agressive, but i always figured if one of us would do it, it would be me.”
gabe shook his head as heather took the milkshake, pulling in air quickly to ease the heat. “no, no i’m not gonna... ooh, yeah, okay, brain freeze.” he closed his eyes and rubbed his temples, glancing sideways at heather. “oh, I see, you prefer philosophers and famous people against philosophical frogs. poor kermit.” gabe shot her a smile as he leaned back in his seat, finally able to get rid of the brain freeze and looking at heather, his cheeky smile turning soft at her words. she couldn’t push it aside, and neither could he. he didn’t want too, unless, of course, she didn’t want them to happen. while he was scared of that, gabe wasn’t totally sure that was going to happen, her not wanting them. which he was grateful for. his eyes glanced at her hand rising up his leg, laughing as she noticed, his arm wrapping around her. “you make me excited, as well. and nervous, and scared, but what fun is life if you don’t experience all of those emotions?” at her question, he took a second, shrugging his shoulders slightly as he let his fingers twirl a lock of her hair. “I don’t know. I... i was nervous. I didn’t want to lose you, and i’ve seen you shut people out... I didn’t want that. I don’t want that. last night was just...” sighing, he leaned back from the table, trying to find his words. “i’ve loved you for a long time, you’ve been my best friend for years. i’ve gotten to know you and your family, I’ve got to see you through the good and the bad. and last night was... you had that argument with your sister, and i was able to bring you down from that. and instead of you letting it ruin your night, you had fun with me. you let loose and you... your smile was so bright, so energetic. i hate when you don’t smile, I hate not seeing you smile. because your smile lights up the room.” pulling her hand to his lips, he kissed it softly before looking into her eyes. “something my dad used to say to my mom... it’s cheesy.” he let her hand drop and took a deep breath, “you’re like the sun. you’re warm and bright, you’re smile is contagious. and everyone around you is a sunflower. without you, in my life, i don’t have much to warm me up. you’re my center, i know I can always turn to you.” he brushed some of her hair behind her hair, about to touch his lips to hers when the table jolted below him, about to turn and raise his voice when he noticed the red-head. “Harper?”
