Laser Wearing Jeans
A GIF doing the rounds at reddit at the moment demonstrating how an industrial system creates the worn and distressed look on denim is created - below is a more comprehensive demonstraton of how the tech works and what more can be done with it:

Glad to have Facebook moms enjoying my content.
To be fair, most great horned owls canāt parallel park either.
Most great horned owls????

Nothing can contend with the fluffy of a barn owl!
I donāt usually post content where I volunteer. Mainly because the birds there arenāt falconry birds. That said, this video is cool and I want to share it.
This is called a rouse, and itās the sign of a content, happy raptor. Iāve noticed its rare for owls to do, so I feel blessed that Jasper felt comfortable enough to do it in front of me.
Jasper is an education bird at a licensed center. He is not my bird nor a pet.
Owl rouses are so rare! A blessing has been bestowed!

You've heard this refrain before -- giving money to homeless people is not the best way to help them because it might be squandered, or spen
āResearchers gave 50 recently homeless people a lump sum of 7,500 Canadian dollars (nearly $5,700). They followed the cash recipients' life over 12-18 months and compared their outcomes to that of a control group who didn't receive the payment. The preliminary findings, which will be peer-reviewed next year, show that those who received cash were able to find stable housing faster, on average. By comparison, those who didn't receive cash lagged about 12 months behind in securing more permanent housing.
People who received cash were able to access the food they needed to live faster. Nearly 70% did after one month, and maintained greater food security throughout the year. The recipients spent more on food, clothing and rent, while there was a 39% decrease in spending on goods like alcohol, cigarettes or drugs.ā
Itās almost like people self medicate to survive intense stress like, idk, not having the cash to live anywhere but outdoors. People who are extremely poor do not want to be poor, we WANT to be safe and have autonomy in our lives but capitalism makes that impossible for some people.
And drug/alcohol abuse, even when prioritized over eating and other necessities, isnāt some kind of alien mindset, itās very often a matter of not having the resources to actually be safe and fully meet your actual needs so you have to cope somehow with the suffering that deprivation causes.
This is a perfect example of the kind of important study that shouldnāt NEED to be done, but does need to be done so we can once and for all implement policies that actually help people.

Literally anyone whoās read the results of any other time this experiment has been tried. Why are we still trying to prove the concept?
Hereās the link if anyone wants it!
https://www.newscientist.com/article/2242937-universal-basic-income-seems-to-improve-employment-and-well-being/
Finlandās two-year test of universal basic income has concluded that it doesn't seem to disincentivise working, and improves recipientsā men
Weāre still trying to prove the concept because in the West, Big Business and their owners, The 1%, are screaming at the thought of having to give up a little money so everyone can get universal income that supports life - meaning jobs either have to pay you to put up with the literal shit or people can walk away from them without becoming homeless.
Our entire system is basically based on people being so afraid of homelessness and starvation that theyāll accept any shit job for shit pay.
Past experiments have shown that UBI:
Increases high school graduation rates
Reduces:
Domestic violence
Alcoholism
Emergency room visits related to mental health
Road traffic accidents.
All while not disincentivizing employment for most groups (the exceptions being high school students, who were able to focus on their studies, and new mothersā¦who were using it as maternity leave!)
People, for the most part, want to work.
UBI would allow us to expand the definition ofĀ āwork.ā If somebody can live off of UBI, then they can devote themselves to things which we donāt currently value financiallyĀ such as the arts, raising children well, etc.
And if somebody wants to stay home and play video games all dayā¦then so be it. Not that many will.,..and of those who do most will probably find some way to make thatĀ into theirĀ āwork,ā whether by providing play throughs and tutorials or competing seriously.
If somebody stops working all together as soon as they get UBI and stays home to play video games, they probably desperately needed a break.
There are so many people who are struggling with mental and physical illnesses, and chronic pain, who are still breaking themselves working because they donāt have another option - because it can take years to get on disability, and itās not enough to survive on, so people keep going as long as they possibly can.
Even if itās not a matter of disability, as such ⦠people get burned out?
Weāre not really built to do school and work with minimal breaks to the extent that we do.
Despite what our puritanical culture says, thereās no shame in needing a break.
