what if we start spreading dove fyodor symbolism and raven nikolai symbolism instead of the vise versa😂😂😂hearme out
I’m not talking about them as avians literally (but i fw the idea heavy lowk). The concept of “Dove” Fyodor is mostly created by Fyodor’s real goals and attitude instead of his reputation and others perception of him. “Dove” Fyodor is not exactly a mask of Fyodor’s real intentions, it’s quite the opposite. It’s his raw, bare, and genuine self. However, people cannot see this and treat it as if it’s something he’s using to hide behind— perceiving him as a “Raven” at his core.
Nikolai’s often compared to a Dove due to his desire for freedom and religious symbolism. However, there is a difference between desire and being. Narratively, it’s believable that Nikolai will never get the freedom he truly wants so long as he’s alive. Him being a Dove will never get him farther than being a bird stuck in a cage. Nikolai desires being a Dove, but be is not one. He will never be one.
Additionally, Fyodor being a “Dove” and Nikolai being a “Raven” would add to their dynamic and how Nikolai is, to say the least, interested in Fyodor (going back on that desire to be a dove/achieve freedom or wtv).
In the Bible, Ravens can have a negative association. They often dwell within areas after havoc and ruin happens, when all that is left is desolate. However, because of this, they can also be associated with judgement and overseer of consequences of sin/disobedience. Although this role is more fit for someone like Fyodor when it comes to judgement, we have to remember Nikolai’s self awareness.
Nikolai’s desire for freedom comes from his belief that the human mind is a cage, and how he’s so horribly aware of that fact. We also have to remember that Nikolai has explicitly been stated to be against/resist God. He’s a sinner who’s aware of his sinning (overseer of his own disobedience and sins). However, that is not the only thing he has committed to be considered taboo. Throughout the show, although Nikolai understands logically that it’s wrong to kill people, he still does it. In ways that are excessively cruel, inhumane, and immoral— until he’s done or the only one left. Similarly to how a Raven dwells during the aftermath of havoc and ruin.
In general, doves have always been associated with some sort of purity; this part has always irked me when it came to Nikolai. Nikolai is more willing to dirty his hands than Fyodor is throughout the show, he doesn’t kill people and only does when it’s absolutely necessary. Doves act as the messenger for God and have a more pure connection to God than ravens do, similarly to Fyodor and Nikolai when it comes to the relationship of “God” in Bungou Stray Dogs.
Fyodor is not inherently evil. He lies mostly on the morally gray scale when it comes to his intentions and ideals. It’s not exactly mischaracterization to perceive him as a raven, more so that it just doesn’t capture HIM— rather just the perception of him (based off his actions). Nikolai may not fit the physical characteristics of a raven, but he behaves like one biblically more than Fyodor. Their dynamic would not change if the roles were flipped; it just reveals another part of themselves. The words to describe Fyolai are not real, they can exist in their own role and in each other’s role without issue. Synonymously; with the same connotation, implications, and references.
please correct me on anything if it’s wrong, especially when it comes to the biblical references. I suck ass. They are used as indirect analytical references to the characters.
I think mixes of raven/crow interpretations in the Bible were used. i keep forgetting and im a chud
