If the Star Wars Prequels used negative reviews in their promo photos
Not to be bitter, but a ton of the wanking around things like the dialogue in these films has to do with Western media canonâs complete and utter obsession with ânaturalisticâ dialogue and complete dismissal of other forms of dialogue writing that donât follow this convention.
I grew up with the disparate influences of the LOTR and Dune books and Bollywood films and all of those have received varying levels of hatred for their dialogue not following modern Western storytelling conventions (âsmoothâ naturalistic dialogue, pop-culture quip laden exchanges, etc. The latter Iâve started to call âWhedonismâ writing, because it was particularly popularised via Joss Wheldonâs work). Just recently I was reading a review of the first Dune book that was complaining about the âstiffâ dialogue and the âsterileâ characterization and I realized that a lot of people just donât know what to *do* with writing that falls outside of a narrow band of style.
Me, I immensely enjoy forms of dialogue that follow grand, opera-like conventions, with nary a quippy âWhedonismâ in sight. Dialogue that works like a tone-poem. Dialogue thatâs allowed to kick âsmoothnessâ straight to the curb, in service of rawness (and anyone who whinges about Anakinâs dialogue seriously hasnât gone through a love-confession by way of inexperienced teenage boy. 'Awkwardâ is their default mode of communication. Itâs just that Western cinema canon trained viewers to expect smooth, suave leading men, not broken youths with little interaction outside of a monastic order and more trauma than a combat veteran).
Also, these film critics completely and utterly missing the entire point of what the Jedi are supposed to be in the PT (the ossified remnant of a once-great monastic order, now immensely diminished and disconnected from the social and political realities around them) is supposed to make me say âoh, these people have FANTASTIC reading comprehension and Iâm going to trust them for media analysis?â This is what happens when your critics are people who spent dscades masturbating themselves to a froth over their fantasies of what the Jedi / the Old Republic / Anakin would be like and were faced not with grand romantic ideals, but highly flawed people and broken, barely-functional institutions.
Honestly, Lucas *should* have used these lines as marketing material, but I can see why he didnât, it takes a special kind of chutzpah to sneer at the Western cinema critic class. In any case, I respect him enormously for sticking to his vision and the story he wanted to tell and how he wanted to tell it. I donât know if this last point is specifically a failure of Western society or of hyper-capitalistic âmedia-as-products-for-mass-consumptionâ, but more people should be immensely unsettled by the enormous pressure on creatives to follow a particular mold and sand off all edges or outright allow their work to be modified by committee, so it has mass-market appeal.
This is one week set apart from the rest of the year that will be entirely dedicated to PadmĂŠ and Anakin, in the form of â ART! You are invited to show your love for this pairing using any artistic expression of your choice, be that; drawings, edits, videos, gifs, literature etc. This means all fanworks are accepted, from the traditional art and fic to videos or playlists, anything you make, we want to see. Be creative, and take your muse wherever it leads you! This is not a contest of skill, but an event to showcase our appreciation for literally how much we cannot contain our love for this couple (itâs not something to be suppressed, believe us!) What will happen is between the dates of May 4th to May 10th there will assigned themes. Please do not start submitting works until these dates. As has been practice for the past few AnidalaWeeks, this year there will be two daily themes, to encourage a greater number of works from even more participants. Any and all levels of involvement are welcomed, from posting everyday to only having something for one of the days. The most important thing is to have fun and share your love of Anidala!
Anidala Week 2021 Themes:
Day 1 - May 4th: Headcanon/Missing Scene OR Favorite Scene
Day 2 - May 5th:Â Â Canon Divergence OR Favorite Canon work
Day 3 - May 6th:Â Mythology/Fairy Tales OR Favorite Touches
Day 4 - May 7th: Modern AU OR Favorite Trope
Day 5 - May 8th: Fusion/Alternate Fandom OR Favorite Quote
Day 6 - May 9th: Time Travel OR Favorite Parallel
Day 7 - May 10th: Free Day As is Anidalaweek tradition, the last day is a free day. No prompt or theme, make whatever you want to make!
Any questions or concerns, the Anidalaweek ask box is always opens. There is also a guidelines page up on the blog for instructions on how to post your work. Itâs only March now so thereâs plenty of time to start creating! More information will come out as needed!Â

(via Padme of Naboo : StarWars)
One of the neatest things about the Prequel Trilogy is that the character traits which, in any other circumstances, would be virtues end up being the cause of the characterâs downfall. Obi-Wanâs dedication to the rules is why he fails as Anakinâs mentor. Padmeâs faith in âhumanâ decency and her drive to help others, makes her unable to see the problems of both her husband and the Republic until itâs too late. Anakinâs sense of personal loyalty, need to help, and, most critically, deference to authority, lead him to become Vader. The fact that itâs everyoneâs virtues, rather than their flaws, which destroy them make their stories that much more tragic.
Itâs also a very classical move, story-wise. Thatâs primarily how tragedy works. Take the epitome of humanity, and the very thing that makes their strength, brings their downfall. You can do the same exercise with everyone of Shakespeareâs tragic protagonists, as well as many Greek ones as well.
âsay what you want about the prequels-â ok i will. i love them
