Day 16- Question

Life has uncertainties but not for Evan Rosier. A prodigal son to a prominent family meant a promising future, provided he followed the road map his father and grandfather had laid out and followed.

He'd been paraded since day one. Networking was second nature to him. Pandora had her own road map, one that she had chosen to ignore as she walked along a path she forged. Evan wasn't like Pandora, he remained clutched in his family's grasps. An act of rebellion here and there, a measley prank, a few quid down the drain but nothing scandalous. Nothing bringing shame to the lovely Rosier name. Every question he was asked, his father answered. Evan never had the privilege of thinking for himself.

"Do you want to run away with me?" Barty asked, eyes fixed at Evan dragging the cigarette away from his mouth.

"What?"

"Do you wanna run away with me" Barty repeated. Evan stared at him, face blank then gazed away. A second passed, then five, a whole minute. Silence settled around them, but it wasn't the same comfortable silence they both relished in. Barty could see the gears turn in Evan's head, he could feel Evan analysing all the pros and cons, weighing his options before making a decision.

This wasn't a part of Evan's road map. Sure, a fling with his roommate hadn't been either but it wasn't anything in the grand scheme of things, or so Evan thought. Now, he was sitting on the roof with said roommate, with whom he was hopelessly in love and wanted to spend forever with. So in that moment Evan made a choice. The first question he'd ever had the autonomy to answer, the first question dictating the rest of his life, the first ever question that wasn't a trap. After careful consideration, Evan's eyes met Barty's.

"Fuck yeah!"

10 years later, in their humble studio apartment in Prague, Evan asked the question. Barty answered. Within a week they were married.

The wands wooshed. Regulus's quill scratched ink onto the paper. The sand in the hourglass fell. The staircases rejoined with a "thump". Evan's fingers drummed on the table. The floor boards creaked. The professor rambled on. The clock ticked.

Barty couldn't focus. Every sound irked him more. He pressed his index fingers to his temples, hoping the pressure would relieve the headache he felt coming on. Momentarily it did. There was a deafening silence.

"You fucking waste of space." His father's voice played in his mind. "Associating yourself with the Rosiers?" His mother mocked.

"Your father and I have done so much for you! Why are you doing this to us?! We've given you everything youve ever wanted!" He could see his mother sob on the sofa, Evan's letter lay crumpled on her lap.

"How desperate can you be to seek love from a boy?! You are no son of ours!" His father jabbed an accusatory finger at him.

He didn't expect his parents to find the letter. He couldn't speak. He couldn't fight for himself. He stood there in front of his parents with tears streaming down his face. He couldn't even move as his parents set fire to the letter. He shut down.
