If youâre looking for a simple, yet meaningful, resolution to make for 2019 thatâs easy to keep and will make you an endlessly better person, do this:
Think about the amount of mental/emotional/physical work youâre expecting someone else to do, and just do it yourself.
If you make a mess in the kitchen, clean it up. Donât leave it for someone else.
If you toss paper towels at the trashcan in a public bathroom (or any bathroom), and miss, pick them up off the floor and donât make the poor janitor do it. They have enough to do.
Fold the laundry every now and then. If youâre feeling ambitious, take charge of washing it. It didnât get dirty without you; maybe getting it clean will make you more mindful of how you take care of your stuff.
This works in conversations and daily interactions too: donât expect other people to do all the heavy lifting. Get in there and help. Get in there and DO something.Â
Tip as extravagantly as you can afford. If you canât afford it, tip what you can, and make a point of saying nice words about the person who helped you to the manager. It makes a difference when youâre not just Yelping about not getting enough free bread or other BS that makes everyone whoâs working hard at that restaurant look bad because you had a shitty attitude that night.
Look around your life, and ask yourself: âhow much of this am I actually taking ownership of, and how much am I assuming that someone else will provide that I am capable of doing on my own?âÂ
Relieving the burden on other people not only frees them up and makes their lives easier and better, it reminds you that youâve got autonomy, and that youâre a useful human being who thinks about someone other than your own damn self.

Let me tell you a secret: eventually, this thing that is tripping you up at the moment, is going to be one of your greatest strengths.
Hoping beyond hope this is true.

reblogging for the sheer Halloween ambiance of these pics
The black cats are witches that summoned their pumpkin friend for a cuddle party
âMy parents arenât giving me the freedom to be responsible. Â Mamaâs fine. Â But Papa is an Egyptian father. Â He wants me to always be in a safe, cozy home. Â Recently I wanted to go on an educational trip to Sri Lanka. Â I begged him. Â I said, âPlease, Iâll be living with a family. Â Iâll call you ten times a day.â Â But he wouldnât listen. Â I locked myself in my room and cried. Â I wanted that experience. Â I wanted to meet beautiful people, and eat beautiful food, and take beautiful photos. Â I know my dad very well. Â He just doesnât trust people. Â He thinks that Iâm naĂŻve. Â He thinks that everyone who helps you wants something in return. Â But thatâs not why I help people. Â I love people. Â I love languages. Â I can even speak a little Hindi. Â I want to see every village and every city. Â I even want to work for NASA one day. Â I love physics and astronomy. Â But Papa thinks astronomy is a bad idea. Â He doesnât get it. Â Itâs not that he doesnât understand the stars. Â He just doesnât understand me.â Â (Alexandria, Egypt)
ââŚthe older I get, the more I see how women are described as having gone mad, when what theyâve actually become is knowledgeable and powerful and fucking furious.â
â Sophie Heawood (via brosetta-stone)
âMy grandmother was the first in our family to discover it. Â One day she joined a meditation in the park. Â She was taking so many medications at the time, but she threw them all away and never took another trip to the hospital. Â That was before the crackdown. Â At one time were one hundred million followers of Falun Gong in China. Â Itâs a peaceful religion. Â But the following grew too big. Â Our teacher seemed like a threat to the government. Â They said crazy things on state media. Â They called it a cult. Â They said weâre terrorists and that we kill our parents. Â They began to arrest us. Â They even harvested our organs. Â I know it sounds crazy, but you can Google it. Â We tried to resist. Â We practiced inside our home. Â We secretly handed out fliers to push back against the propaganda. Â But they caught me on camera. Â Everywhere there are cameras. Â They followed me to my home. Â They shoved me in their car. Â For eight months I was in detention. Â The first thing they did was take a sample of my blood. Â For hours every day they put us in a room and forced us to watch television about how to be a good citizen. Â If anyone looked away, the whole group was punished. Â Eventually my family bribed the court with huge money and they let me go. Â But for three years I had to write a letter every month saying that I am a guilty person. Â When my probation ended, I left the country.â

i donât know how many times iâm gonna have to say it:
if voting did not matter, republicans would not be making it this hard for you to vote
âI want to be a hematologist. Thatâs a blood doctor. Well not a blood doctor, exactly. But a doctor that finds cures for blood diseases.â âHowâd you decide on that?â âWe were dissecting frogs in class and learning about how the blood flows through the body. And I went home that night and wrote an essay. And it wasnât like any other essay Iâd ever done. Normally when I write essays, it takes me a long time, but this was the fastest essay I ever wrote. So the next day I was asking the teacher mad questions, and she was like, âYou know you can get a job in this.â And she pulled it up on the internet, and was showing me all about hematologists.â

I love it when someone gets that thunderbolt âI wanna do this foreverâ moment. Itâs amazing to see that change in them once theyâve got an actual concrete dream to work towards.
That is what teaching is all about to me. Exposing kids to the world and helping them find their thing whatever it is.
