n-ice to meet you!
Bringing her legs up and tucking them beneath her, sitting on her feet, Effie sat with her chin in one cupped hand and fixed the man with dark eyes, listening to his response. More so than before, she was certain that he was glamoured - it was the telltale haze around the ears, almost unnoticeable to most but easy enough to spot with a millennium of practice. It was difficult to focus on it, with the eye naturally wanting to flick elsewhere, but this was only another sign of glamouring in her experience. She had personally never had the time for glamours - what was life for, if not honesty? Besides, she had little herself to hide⊠Unlike Johanås, it seemed. Perhaps she should try and broach the subject! It was difficult to decide her route of enquiry whilst simultaneously juggling the conversation at hand.
You do not get along with your family? Not an uncommon experience, it seemed, amongst people on this island. Her own family of sorts had been very much welcoming upon her return home, but this did not detract from their role in her departure so long ago! I understand this feeling! It is often easier to make a new family, no? This is why I see Toli so often, and why I live with my best friend! The mere mention of Aspen made her smile grow all the wider, the corners of her eyes crinkling as though her face reflected her true age. She did love him, truly! And Toli too! Deciding this was a good time to begin her investigation, she added, I have made many more friends here, and perhaps you will too! It is so nice to have a community like this, no? When I lived in Italy, it was so hard to be comfortable around the people, but here it is so lovely!Â
âGrocery trips were always a bit of an adventure - even more so when actively trying to balance two very distinct diets. Evolution seemed to be playing a cruel trick on him and his standard errands this afternoon. The trip took much, much longer than Toli expected, his promise of âfifteen or twenty minutesâ crumbling into dust as he meandered the aisles, hunting for suitable sustenance. He was pretty sure heâd never even been down one or two of these before⊠Gods. By the time he finished, he had nearly ten bags of a myriad of products, and a very damp trip back to get through. The walk back to his home was almost arduous, if only for the need to protect the items in the plastic bags decorating his forearms from the intensified downpour. Maybe he should look into getting one of the vehicles that had begun to appear⊠Hm. Heâd have to think on that. Maybe there was someone he could borrow from, just for a little bit, instead of needing his own.Â
Toli got home and wrenched the door open with only a slight struggle, more than a little surprised to see two living beings in his living room instead of just the one heâd left behind. Ah. Well, then. He smiled wide, setting his bounty on the scuffed wood floors. âÎÏη! ÎΔΜ ÎźÎŸÎ”Ïα ÏÏÎč Ξα ÏÏÎÏΔÎč Μα ÎÏÏÎżÎœÏαÎč. ÎλÎÏÏ Î”ÏÎ”ÎŻÏ ÎżÎč ÎŽÏÎż ÏÏ ÎœÎ±ÎœÏΟΞηÎșαΜ.â Of course, heâd meant to introduce the two at some point, but⊠If fate would have it this way, then so be it. âÎλÏÎŻÎ¶Ï ÎœÎ± ΎΔΜ ÏÎżÎœ ÎČαÏÎ±ÎœÎŻÎ¶ÎżÏ Îœ ÏολÏ. ÎÏ ÏÏÏ Î”ÎŻÎœÎ±Îč Î”Ï Î±ÎŻÏΞηÏÎżÏ.â He made his way to where JohanĂĄs was perched, gently tugging on the tip of his ear. âTake it off, yes? Effie is good. No fear, αγαÏÎč ÎŒÎżÎž.â He leaned to press a chaste kiss to the elfâs forehead, pulling away with a sense of mild embarrassment not unlike he would feel if his mother were here. Effieâs presence always held an odd sway over his emotions. The bull plopped down onto the couch, abandoning the groceries for now, completely expecting the lapful of tiny elf soon to come.
âHe almost felt the need to overshare, but doing so in this manner would lead to many secrets being spilled, which was wholly unnecessary. "No. I do not. Blood means very little to me." It was not that he needed a new family - he'd been fine with Lars and Lisbet, even if they were paid to be his surrogates. He sometimes found himself wondering if it was all fake, after all these years, but they did agree to come to this island... It was an action that indubitably put their livelihoods in jeopardy, but they were here anyway; acting like they always have, like a strange mixture of parental figures and older siblings. Even after near two centuries of practice, there was a hopefully low chance of such camaraderie being falsified.
Before he could finish answering the grubby child's prodding, the front door opened, making JohanĂĄs' hands clench tight as if around a weapon that wasn't there. Instinct, of course. The man entering was very much welcome - it was his home, after all. The bull's return at last near instantly placated him, the tension in his jaw loosening and his hands unclenching, gaze dark and ever-so-slightly predatory as it followed the large man across the room. The spurts of Greek were assumedly directed towards Effie, making him wish yet again to be free of his glamour's prison and back with his proper enchantments. He didn't enjoy being unable to understand. A small smirk pulled at the corners of his mouth as Anatolius approached, though the tug to his already uncomfortable ear made him wince, almost imperceptively but not quite. The words of freedom to follow filled him with something he'd almost call joy. The elf immediately reached up to yank off his enchanted jewelry, sighing with the release of pent up heat as his newly reformed ears fluttered up-down-up-down, quick as a rabbit's foot against the earth, desperately trying to lower his core temperature. Good gods. The prince did, in fact, clamber directly into the other's lap, despite the continued danger of overheating. If this was how he died, from overheating while strewn across the giant's chest, then it was a death he would accept.Â

n-ice to meet you!
Clambering down from the box and closing the cupboard neatly, Effie filled her own glass to the brim and drank enthusiastically, holding it with both hands and gulping down water like a child. With a satisfied ahh, she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and carefully washed and dried the glass for Toli - it was good manners, no? She would not want him to have to waste his time when she could tidy her own mess! Nosing around the kitchen unsupervised, she found a sad, withered little apple that she carefully returned to glowing freshness in her cupped hands. Perfect! She had not eaten in several hours, and had discovered this snack with great timing!Â
Good mood bolstered yet more by her fruity discovery, the dryad pranced into the living room and perched on the arm of the couch. She loved being able to swing her legs freely, and had long since decided that this was one of the perks of being smaller. Never one for silence by any means, sheâd already reached for her board, tapping lightly on it with one end of her chalk as she pondered her next question. It was not a lack of questions that she was struggling with by any means; she simply could not decide what to ask first! After a few seconds of deliberation, she settled on three questions and held her board up once she had finished writing them: I have not seen you before! Are you new to the island? Do you live nearby, or perhaps with family? It seems that many people here come alone, does it not?
The freezing drink helped, a tiny bit at the least, but didnât fix the heat issue. The prince wasnât fond of the damp, but he was beginning to pray to the gods for the rainâs return. At least being wet cooled him down some... Ugh. Even with the heat, the few moments of alone time were nice. He thought he felt a twinge of magic coming from the kitchen for a moment, something that wasnât his, but of course that would not be true. It would just be cruel of Anatolius to not divulge that he had friends similar to themselves, and Anatolius was not a cruel man. Perhaps he was getting heat stroke, and beginning to hallucinate. That would be befitting, considering his apparent bad luck streak. The filthy intruder returned, complete with a sticky hand, and the elf sighed. He would mourn his short-lived sense of peace.
âNo. I have been here many months now.â JohanĂĄs was not very good at keeping track of time, but the move occurred shortly before his birthday, and the oft-hidden sun was rising higher and staying longer... It had to have been at least a half of a solar year. â...Family, of a sort. More so than my blood, at the least.â Lars and Lisbet had always been there. Usually his kind were very hands-on in child rearing, often with the extended family and friends involved - but not so with royals. There were far too many responsibilities to handle to also bother with properly raising a child, especially one without a claim to the throne. Attendants were perfectly suited to take the place of true family, raised from an early age to serve the crown and the ones who live under its thumb. âI tend towards solitude, outside of my housemates and Anatolius.â My, she was nosy. Why all the questions? Could they not just wait in silence for the bullâs return?

â whatâs their posture like in a normal situation?
perfect, mostly. shoulders back and level, chin high. he walks more on his toes than the soles of his feet, but thats a normal gait for his kind. hes nearly always posing as if people are staring directly at him.
â what is one of their favorite items?
heâs especially fond of his fox fur stole. the furâs origin was his own kill, on a hunting trip some 50 odd years ago. heâs taken incredibly good care of it.
n-ice to meet you!
A smile! He smiled! Keen-eyed and eager to please as ever, it had not passed Effie by in the slightest, and the dryadâs own face broke into a wider grin than usual. The first steps on the path to friendship, clearly! Oh, and what he said was so true! It had been much harder to adapt to learning new languages in recent years - when she had first left the forest, she had to first learn written Greek (for nobody needed to write in the forest!) and then Italian in its varied forms, and whatever she could pick up along the way, until the English language became almost unbearably widespread. Trying to pick up French for Aspen was definitely trickier than anything she had done before! She decided to share this with JohanĂĄs and took a few seconds to write before flipping the board again, âI agree! My best friend is from France, and it has been much harder to learn with him than it was to learn English when I first left Greece! Maybe we are getting old, no?â There was truly no way that he could be older than her, she did not think, but perhaps he was old for his species.
Slipping off the couch and nodding, Effie held up her board, âI will come too!â She did not particularly want to be left by herself, and she enjoyed Toliâs kitchen much more than her own. Pattering ahead of him, she hunted out the box she liked to stand on and dragged it below the cupboard she needed, clambering up to get herself a glass. Not having hands to write her message, she took a second glass and waggled it in offering to her new friend, hoping he understood the gesture.
Old. JohanĂĄs was much too far from home to hear this kind of character slander - he wasnât old! He wasnât even 200 yet, not for a few more months at least. Who needed this kind of harassment? The idea of being old made his parentsâ voices ring through his head, arguments about titles and duchies and consorts and styles and why canât you grow up and act like you deserve your status, think of the example youâre setting, the people are depending on you. How could they be depending on him when he would never have any real power? He would be shoved in an insufficient castle on the very southern edges of the kingdom with a spouse he didnât want as soon as he returned home. The implications, even if they were unknown to Effie, left him scowling again. Ugh. Horrific.Â
The prince stomped off to the kitchen, and oh, good gods, she was like a tiny, tanned parasite. Getting a glass of water couldnât take more than a few minutes, did she really need to tag along? Still, he wordlessly took the glass from her outstretched hand, pivoting to fill the glass from the tap. He took a single sip before exiting the room again, continuing his offended silence. She wasnât expecting him to retrieve her drink as well, was she? He didnât even truly want to get his own. Normally he had people to do such things for him, but alas, today he was alone. Once the little gremlin of a not-his-house guest was behind him and he was perched back on the couch, he brough his drink down to the proper temperature of just above a cup full of slush with a quick jolt of magic. What sort of heat relief could a lukewarm puddle provide? None. Thatâs the sort.

n-ice to meet you!
Oh! Oh, he was learning! Maybe he was a better friend to Toli than she thought! This was definitely more promising news, she decided. If sheâd been a more easily upset soul, she might have even been wounded that Toli hadnât thought to tell her about this friend of his - she thought they talked about everything! Looking a little thoughtful for a second, the dryad used the heel of her hand to wipe off her board before carefully chalking something in the centre of the board, adding a little annotation afterwards. After sizing this up, she tilted the board back to JohanĂĄs and let him read with an encouraging smile. In large letters, sheâd written ÎÏÎŹÎœÎœÎ·Ï and beside this, in smaller letters, (I think this is the closest to your name in Greek! It is difficult to switch between languages, yes?).
She really did hope he wanted to become friends⊠A little because she loved having people to call upon as she pattered around the town, but mostly because she wanted to go out for a picnic later! If Toliâs friend did not like her, how could she invite them both to sit out in the park and take advantage of the rare sunlight? He did not look like he had been outside in the sunlight for more than half an hour in his entire life! The contrast between his pale skin and her own tanned legs was a little startling, although many of the islanders appeared a little washed out and pale in her eyes. He would definitely benefit from coming out for more walks - and Effie was just the person to encourage him!
The personal translation made him soften a bit, lips gently curving into half a smile. How... Endearing. âIt is. I speak two -â Three.  â- languages now, but I learned them in my youth. It has been far more difficult to retain information than I remember.â Not to mention, he spent half the time that was meant for learning whining about having to remove his enchantments. It was difficult to truly learn the words if he was understanding them as soon at they hit his ear canals, though the same was very beneficial for diplomacy.
JohanĂĄs shifted in his seat uncomfortably, ultimately removing his gloves before settling down again. The one downside of Anatoliusâ apartment was that it was hot. The elven folk of the north were not built with sweat glands, and oversize ears played a large part in thermoregulation. Glamours were complicated magic, and truly changed a piece of you, but only a piece, and the prince found himself quickly beginning to overheat. How incredibly unfortunate. Hopefully, Anatolius would return sooner rather than later, or this grubby child would decide to leave. He could only pray one or the other happened before the unbearably undignified panting commenced. âI am going to pour myself a drink. Excuse me.â Perhaps that would be an appropriate temporary solution.
n-ice to meet you!
Following her new friend into the living room, leaving her little satchel of spare chalks and seed packets by the door with all the familiarity of a regular houseguest, the dryad pattered over to the couch and hopped up, squidging herself into her preferred corner and tucking her grass-smudged knees up to her chest. The rare weather had encouraged Effie to wear something that she actually owned for once, and she took a moment to look down at herself and admire the soft shift dress, rubbing the fabric between her fingers absently.Â
Delighted to be given a name, Effie nodded rapidly and saved it to memory, trying to visualise the spelling in her head. People did not like it if their names were misspelled - she couldnât help it! English was not her first language, and it was only many centuries of practice that had cemented its wiggly alphabet in her mind. She gave a surprised blink, head cocked, and almost blurted the question out before biting her tongue and rapidly writing it out. How odd that this friend of Toliâs did not know Greek! She could not imagine a friendship with Aspen without knowing French. Hm. She would have to prod Toli on this, perhaps. Flipping her board around, she waited for him to read what sheâd written: Hello, JohanĂĄs! I am very glad to meet you :) It is always good to share friends, and if you are in Toliâs home, we will become very good friends, yes? I did not know that you could not read Greek :O This is something we must change! It was only a name for your lovely hair :)
As the newcomer clambered up on the couch, JohanĂĄs scooted farther away, the sight of her dirty knees and toes off putting. His head itched with discomfort - had he been able to be un-glamoured, his ears would have tipped back, and the lack of mobility caused him unease. It was giving him a stress headache, but until this little beast left, he supposed he would just have to manage. Glamours were horrid things. Heâd no clue how Anatolius managed to stay in one for so long, and even find it preferable, if he were to be believed.
The prince read the new message and twisted the ends of said hair between his fingertips, silently pleased with the compliment. âI am learning,â he stated, leaving out the painful âslowly.â Languages were difficult, and he wasnât ready to embark on the journey of yet another alphabet. Elvish had an extensive set of characters, and the Latin alphabet covered most of the other things he knew. Spoken was just... Easier, sometimes. âI have not begun with reading yet. All in time, I suppose.â The chunk about âfriendsâ he wasnât sure how to respond to, so he didnât. If this little one was human, he could never find himself comfortable enough to be âfriends.â Anatolius was too friendly. Some of the company he kept was absolutely perplexing.

n-ice to meet you!
While Toliâs houseguest read her message, Effie did as she was accustomed to do, and openly inspected his face as she waited. Well, he was certainly no human! He had all the ethereal beauty of a naiad, too finely boned and soft-haired to be anything else but inhuman. By Heracles, sheâd have been shocked to see Toli consorting so intimately with a human. Letting her eyes drift down, she made a mental note of his clearly well-made attire and decided sheâd ask Toli later - or Aspen, if she wanted to be sly. Oh, yes, sheâd definitely tell Aspen!
Ah! Of course he was getting food! Silly Toli⊠He was so used to living with his family that he was always lacking good food in his little human refrigerator⊠much to her chagrin. Smiling fondly, she nodded as he spoke, smiling all the wider when he invited her in. Oh, perfect! How lovely! Toli had chosen his friend so well! Rewarding her newfound friend with a delighted beam, the dryad bounced up the final step and into the house, already swinging her board up to write a message of thanks: âYou are very kind! Toli will not mind at all that I am here - when he is out, I often sit on the doorstep and wait!â By âwaitâ, she mostly meant ânappingâ, but he did not need to know this less-than-laudable habit. âHave you got a name,Â ÎŸÎ±ÎœÎžÎŹ ΌαλλÎčÎŹ?â
The elf had flounced over to the couch, the obvious star of Anatoliusâ sparse living room, in the short time itâd taken this person - Effie, if the board was to be correct - to enter the house. Heâd never been one for waiting for someone, especially without a concrete time frame, his levels of impatience ever mounting. At home, people waited for him, not the other way around. If someone wasnât where he needed them to be, he would return at a later time, or have them fetched by an attendant. He didnât understand how someone could just... Sit outside like that. Would she have done such a thing if he hadnât been inside? Hm. Astounding.
The written out unfamiliar language stumped him as much as the still lingering sun. Code switching in a verbal manner made sense, but why take the time to do it in writing? It was incredibly suspicious. âYou may address me as JohanĂĄs.â His accent thickened ever-so-slightly around the syllables of his name, a lower and more guttural intonation. âWhat do the letters say? I find it impolite to use a language you donât know if another person understands to their face.â He found no reason to dance around his misgivings, raising a dark eyebrow and staring down the stranger in front of him. Of course, he was beginning to learn Greek, but he was far more interested in the spoken aspects of new languages than the written. It was rude in any case.
n-ice to meet you!
As the door opened fully, the dryad adjusted her line of sight by almost a foot and let her smile widen even greater. Oh, oh, oh! A young man in Toliâs house? He was making friends! The burst of happiness that bloomed in her chest made her want to dance on the spot - happy Toli! This positivity was more than enough to allow her to sail past the less-than-eager greeting, and she cheerfully slid her boardâs strap off her shoulder so that she could write a response.
Having chosen the sunny yellow chalk, to match both her mood and the fortunate weather, Effie neatly chalked out her message and paused, a lock of hair falling over one eye as she tilted her head in thought, before adding a little sun in the top corner and flipping the board around to face Toliâs houseguest - a new potential friend! Maybe he would want to come out and have lunch too! She considered the message to be clear in its explanation of both her state and her intentions: Hello! I am Effie :D I am friends with Toli! I cannot speak, so I will use this board :) The weather is so lovely that I wanted to invite him for a walk and some food, and you are most welcome too!
The stranger was lucky he was feeling particularly docile - on another day, he may have been inclined to shut the door in her face instead of waiting on her to finish writing. The prince squinted at the newly flipped board, focusing for a moment on the doodle in the corner. Why the effort to make the message more visually appealing? Such things had one purpose: To get a point across. There was no need to try and make it âcute.â How very strange.
âAnatolius is not here,â he began, with a surprising level of cordiality. Something about the tiny girl was⊠Inherently charming, or warm, perhaps. âHe is on an errand to the store, for food.â His next sentence continued to be mildly unpredictable. What was with him? âYou are⊠Welcome to come inside and wait for his return. I do hope you are not lying about your level of familiarity with him.â It would be highly unfortunate if this person were to be not telling the truth, and heâd let a true stranger into the bullâs home. JohanĂĄs wasnât sure where his sense of personal defense was this afternoon. He stepped back, letting the door swing a bit wider, and letting the girl invite herself in.
