I am once again playing @anim-ttrpgs 's Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy , and I am once again blown away by how easy it is to make fascinating characters for this game.
Particularly though, I'm blown away by just how different this character feels to play not just from a role-play perspective, but a mechanical, game-rules perspective too.
Eureka has rules about keeping character info secret from your fellow players, so I'm going to share everything my fellow players know and then everything else below a Read More;
"Pigeon" as she goes by- she's not one to talk much about herself, she's more interested in others- is a freelance investigative reporter; let's just say she's always got an ear to the ground, a bird's-eye view on life, and knows how to get around.
Shreveport, Louisiana, 1999. This five-foot-nothing woman is dressed like a rock dove and driving a Vespa, digging around for information about a sudden rash of missing children. She's bold, reckless, a li'l flirty, and good at getting information one way or another.
And so far, that's most of what the others know, because she is in fact quite good at keeping her secrets. More about the character and the actual rules and mechanical interactions below the cut. There's *one* more piece of art hidden down there, too.
Marjorie "The Pigeon" Merriweather; Freelance investigative reporter. She has no place of residence, no permanent home; just a long list of friends and family who she stays with while seeking out the next big scoop. Most of the money she makes from selling these stories, if not to buying food, goes to helping the people who help her; it's not a bad idea to let a bird sit on your windowsill if it occasionally brings you a shiny penny or the kind of info characteristic of being somethin' a li'l birdy told ya'.
She keeps her name a secret for a lot of reasons- partially because being a freelance reporter who leaks a lot of secrets is a great way to make enemies.
And partially because this woman carries a fake ID, a second outfit in that little briefcase, and a plan for who to be when she needs to get somewhere she shouldn't be;
and she's good at it, too.
Leave a window open, and a bird is bound to fly right in.
In the first session of the mystery, she managed to walk straight into a high school by disguising as a substitute math teacher and got a list of missing children straight from the school's principle, without anyone catching on to her.
She might be doing something similar in a hospital next session.
But now I want to talk mechanics; I mentioned the traits above, but she has more like this;
This girl's traits are all about fishing for Contextual Bonuses on Interpersonal Rolls (particularly Deception) regardless of whether she's waltzing in undercover or just interviewing someone.
However, having so many traits means it takes more failed Investigation Rolls before she gets a Eureka! Point, and with all these bonuses, she's a lot less likely to fail Interpersonal Rolls.
She's good at lying, but In three sessions, she has yet to get a Eureka! Point, whereas my other investigator, who has only three traits, has accumulated multiple, getting almost two in the first session alone.
Eureka! Points can be used to change a previous Investigative Roll Failure into a Success, or to increase the chances of Success on certain rolls. Needless to say, they're quite useful, and this trade-off has been quite apparent.
My other investigator, Gwen Wilson, is a very sweet girl with social anxiety trapped in a hotel with a bunch of people and a corpse. Where Pigeon takes a very forward approach to her charm and a deceptive twist to her words, Gwen is very polite, eager to please others, and ridiculously honest, getting herself into places and information out of people which would have been much harder for the bothersome bird to pull off. If I swapped these characters from the mysteries they're in, things would have gone completely different.
I think "People are always allowed to critique media, even indie media, for things that are lacking, ill thought out, or straight up bigoted" and "You should have reasonable expectations for indie creators capabilities, and really need to manage what you say to actual human beings" are two thought processes that really need to coexist
stealin your tags for a sec here but this is an extremely apt comparison.
because we have people who act like someone making any critique of a piece of media on a tumblr blog is equivalent to harrasment
and then we got the complete opposite of people thinking they can say straight up threats to people directly to their twitter/bluesky accounts
and so we end up in this space of a conversation talking about two different subsets of things that happen, that are not at all equivalent. when, where, and how is so important to keep in mind

"[x story type] but what if-" short story. come on man you should know that if your story is easily blurbed down to "interesting thing happens" that is not going to sustain a reader for 400-600 pages. a book is where you write an actual narrative, not a cool idea that came to you in the shower last night.
there's nothing wrong with writing a short story! there are lots of good short stories that revolve around Interesting Ideas. What if I was my own mother. What if fish people were real and also (evil) living in massachusetts. What if you were your own worst enemy, literally. lots of good short stories there, all at just the right length for a cool idea. no one is going to go see the feature-length adaptation of William Wilson though, because that's it. unless you add in a tragic backstory and a love interest and so on and unfortunately there are a lot of novels and movies running around out there that clearly were meant to be a short story before someone took them and stretched them to a silly length.
your short story doesn't even have to be short! herman melville wrote over 100 pages of a guy who hated his job so much he died of being a hater the end. good show, herman. thank you
novellas exist. you can write one. please. it's necessary for the land to survive
