       as alecto turned at the sound of his voice, james couldn’t help but quirk a brow and toss his gaze up and down in question. her excuse told one story, but her choice in outfit told another. he was used to that of course — being lied to now that he seemed to resemble something along the lines of authority. ( he fucking hated this part. ) stepping into the classroom, james stuffed his hands into his pockets and gave a small shrug.  ❛ well to catch you up, it’s half past eleven and you should be well asleep by now. i’m not sure if you know, but there’s this little thing called curfew, and it was two hours ago now. ❜  james understood what alecto was doing — she was good at weaving a story, a play of innocence. it had taken him a few years to learn it, but there was much more to alecto carrow than meets the eye. a small chuckle left his lips as he came to a stop near the desk she sat by.  ❛ wise words there, carrow. is that what you were doing up here? pondering the state of the universe? or should i be smelling for smoke? ❜

a chuckle slipped from his lips at her quick agreement, “were you going to stay at the castle for the holidays?”

“ hm. “  she hummed in a way that could’ve been agreement, weighing what story to give frank.  “  well,  maybe. something about your last year makes it hard to leave this place, despite everything. but it’s considerably less fun when you have to stay. “

           “ half  mad? “   alecto  asked,  the  light  and  innocent  lilt  her  voice  took  on  during  meetings   ( after  all,  it  was  much  harder  to  stir  shit  up  when  one  sounded  like  stirring  shit  was  the  intent  ---  )   still  firmly  in  place.  she  spared  a  quick  glance  for  the  item  in  dorcas’  hand  before  glancing  back  at  the  gryffindor  with  amusement  clear  in  her  eyes.   “ why?  half  mad  for  search  of  the  thing,  or  half  mad  for  misuse  of  my  initials? “  she  rocked  her  weight  to  rest  more  fully  on  the  leg  furthest  from  dorcas.   “ because  that’s  not  mine,  but  plenty  of  students  have  those  initials. “

               sometimes james loved the idea of patrolling the halls late at night as part of his ‘ duties ’  —  other times he HATED it. if he were in a better mood, he would’ve rounded up his boys, thrown them under an invisibility cloak and had some fun. but frankly, without peter to join them, it just wasn’t the same. and knowing that he was alive now, but couldn’t join them ?  well, james thought he had much better things to be doing than this. with a jumper pulled over his slim figure for some semblance of warmth, james was walking quickly through the east halls, ducking his head into every empty classroom — empty, of course, until he found miss alecto carrow hidden at the top of the east tower. sighing with a small level of frustration, james knocked on the door of the classroom she was in, an eyebrow quirked, ready for when she saw him.  ❛ don’t you think it’s a bit late, carrow ?  sleep is invaluable, y’know. ❜
