OLD SCHOOL BROWN‘S CHRISTMAS
By Paul Edward Davis
‘Twas the day before Christmas and in the Brown’s home
Old school was chillin’ but he wasn’t alone.
In the kitchen was mom cooking a meal
By the TV was sister, her name was Lucille.
There was snow on the ground and a chill in the air
And in just one day Christmas will be here.
Old school thought to himself, “it’s about that time
I head to the Mall, it’s half past nine.
I must get some presents for my sister and mom.
Without presents Christmas wouldn’t be fun.”
He just got paid from shoveling snow,
To the store to buy gifts is where he would go.
He went upstairs and cleaned up his room.
Grabbed his Walkman and put on a tune.
Grabbed his coat and headed for the door.
He put on his boots from the hallway floor.
“Where are, you going?” he heard his mom call.
He said “I’m heading downtown
to the Grand Ave Mall.”
Tho’ the trip isn’t easy in the middle of winter
He assured his mom he’d be home by dinner.
He put on his coat and stepped outside
The wind was blowing
And the snow was high.
He arrived at his stop, got his bus pass out.
He boarded the bus and heard someone shout.
It was his friends from school.
He thought, “this is unreal.”
They shoveled snow too and had the same ideal.
He took a seat next to his friend named Pete.
He high-fived his buddy named Paul.
The bus was slow
because of the fresh falling snow
It would take a while to reach the mall.
He decided to look
at a comic book
That was in Pete’s lap.
And he felt a tap from Paul
as they neared the mall.
He must have dozed and taken nap.
He walked through the mall like a man on a mission.
Past the food court
He didn’t need any nutrition.
He strutted his way across the floor.
He went straight for the entrance to the department store.
He knew what he wanted and found a good deal
Perfume for his mom
And a scarf for Lucille
At the register, he stood, he was ready to pay
But to his surprise he lost his wallet that day.
He felt very sad and full of disgust.
He had left his wallet on the seat of the bus.
So he wandered the mall not knowing what to do.
His Christmas was ruined, he knew that was true.
He thought his Christmas was over, his Christmas was done.
He had no money for gifts, none for anyone.
He sat on a bench, his sadness was deep.
He felt another tap on his shoulder and with a glance did he peep.
He turned with a startle and to his surprise
Was the mall Santa in front of his eyes.
His coat was bright red, his beard long and white.
Spreading Christmas cheer was his job tonight.
He said, “young man, why are you still here?
The mall closes early on Christmas eve this year.”
Old school said
“Please excuse me sir, I know It’s Christmas Eve.
Give me a second and then I will leave.”
Santa said
“I will give you a second
I will give you your space.
I’m just curious about the frown on your face.”
Old School said
“My Christmas is ruined.
It got ruined real fast.
I lost my wallet so I have no money or cash.
My Mom will be sad
My sister might shout
Because buying gifts is what Christmas is about.”
Santa said
“Listen up young man, this is not a trick.
I’m not the mall Santa, I’m the real saint Nick.
Don’t feel sad and don’t you pout.
Buying gifts is not what Christmas is about.
It’s the time of year when people are nice
Because we are celebrating the birthday
Of lord Jesus Christ.”
Old school said
“I don’t want to be rude.
I’m not trying to be mean at all.
Your just an old dude
Dressed in red at the mall.
I don’t know what to think or what to feel.
I certainly don’t think that Santa is real.
The north pole sleighs and that long white beard,
Elves, reindeer, all sound weird.”
Saint Nick pulled off his gloves and clapped his hands.
Old school was then transported to a magic Christmas land.
There were bells and music all around was snow
Presents and candy, ornaments aglow.
The trees were adorned, there were lights everywhere.
The elves were dancing like they just didn’t care.
Old school realized
He wasn’t in danger
That’s when things got even stranger.
Santa smiled
He could see in old school’s face
He had just noticed Santa’s all over the place!
Tall Santa’s, short Santa’s,
Santa’s that were new.
Black Santa’s, White Santa’s, Lady Santa’s too.
There was a Santa Claus for every Race.
There were Santa Clauses all over the place.
Saint Nick smiled and explained with glee
“Santa is not one but many you see.
You don’t have to try and tell them all apart
Because Santa exists inside everyone’s heart.
It’s the feeling you get during the holiday season.
You want to give gifts, well Santa’s the reason.
It’s the spirit inside a mom or a dad.
They want to make their kids happy not sad.
It’s the spirit of Christmas that is true.
There is even a Santa inside of you.”
Just then a Santa appeared
An older version of Brown
With a long white beard.
And a belly full and round.
He said
“Ho Ho Ho, don’t worry old chum
Christmas will still come for sister and mom.
You lost your wallet but don’t you fret.
Things will get better for sure I bet
But there is one thing I would like to say.
It’s not presents and gifts that is special this day.
It’s you and the love that you have to share.
Showing your family how much you care.
The greatest gift is from high above.
Showing the world about god’s great love.
Old school understood, he nodded with a laugh
Christmas is not about gifts it’s the feelings we have.
Santa Brown said
"Before you go
Let’s give them a rap
Let’s put on a show.”
Old School said
“That would be fun, I’m willing and able.”
Up popped two mics, an elf and turntable.
They rocked the crowd in Christmas land
Had all the Santa’s dancing and clapping their hands.
The music was bumping. The beat wasn’t whack.
The DJ elf started scratching on a Christmas track.
It was a glorious party, alive with cheer
With cookies and cake and dancing reindeer.
But just then on his shoulder he felt one more tap
He was still on the bus waking from his nap.
He still remembered what he learned that day.
It’s not what you buy or how much you pay.
It was the day we celebrate the birth of Christ
He learned it was about love and Gods sacrifice.
Old School got his gifts and headed out the mall
He saw that Santa at the end of the hall.
Old School smiled and waved as he was about to leave.
He just met the real Saint Nick on Christmas Eve.
He had a bright red coat and beard long and white.
He said merry Christmas old School Brown
And to all a good night!
