I hope I explain this right but it's a symbol not to be afraid of. The symbol became really popular with a clothing company using it with the idea to "Believe in Yourself" rather than many societies' pressure to put your faith in a God you may not need or truly believe in. With this use, many started using the symbol to recognise themselves as an atheist or simply as a supporter of the idea of the symbol. The use of the symbol by this band ties in with many of the themes written about by vocalist Joel Birch who now labels himself as an atheist after growing up in the Catholic church. In no ways is this symbol satanist or anti-christ (it's original use was actually that of the Christian church) but rather supports self worth and independence. Again, I hope this is a good enough explanation and I'm sure your son can explain further.
