“I’m just going to the loo,” Mary shouted to John, pointing out the door as the final chorus of YMCA blared out over the wedding reception. He nodded his head in time with the music, then gave her a thumbs up before lifting his arms to form a Y. Mary shook her head, laughing at him, and made her way to the toilet.
She came out to find Janine standing in front of a mirror and trying to correct her running eye makeup with her pinky finger. She cleared her throat before stepping into Janine’s space. “All right, then?” she asked, washing her hands.
Janine smiled at Mary’s reflection in the mirror. “Yeah, just. Sweaty, you know?”
“Sherlock was right about…”
“Oh, that he was. Not a great dancer, but a sure thing. You know I like that,” Janine said, giving Mary a playful slap on the arm.
“You know, I DO seem to remember that about you,” Mary replied, grinning. It hadn’t been so long ago that their friendship drifted into the ‘with benefits’ category, after all, and some of the tension was still there between them.
“Back to it then?” Janine asked, pulling Mary from her moment of reverie.
“What? Yes, let’s,” she said, pushing the door open. The song changed before they reached the dance floor, and Mary grabbed Janine’s arm without thinking, stopping her short before they could re-enter the reception. It was their song. At least to her it was. “Do you remember?” She didn’t look at Janine until she heard her response.
“Couldn’t forget that, could I?” Janine smiled back at her, eyes dancing as she bit her lip. “Shall we?”
Mary nodded, taking Janine in her arms and guiding the other woman’s hands to her waist as the words drifted out over the dance floor. Mary sang along quietly, “now I’ve got you in my sights with these hungry eyes…”
Janine leaned up and kissed Mary on the forehead as they swayed the the music. “We can still have a movie night, you know. Sleepover, even. I promise I’ll behave,” she said, eyes still gleaming.
Mary rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Can’t say that I would,” she said, shaking her head. “Though I don’t think John would mind.”
“No?” Janine was incredulous. “He doesn’t…”
“Know? Oh, yeah. He absolutely does.” Mary took a couple of wide steps in a circle so that Janine was facing into the dance floor where John stood watching the two of them dancing. He grinned at her, then looked down, embarrassed. “His exact words were, ‘fine, it’s all fine,’ I believe.”
Janine bit back a grin. “Well then, is he hoping for an invite? Or do I get you all to myself?”
“Dunno, actually,” Mary said. “We’ll talk about it when you invite me over.”
The song ended–or transitioned, rather, into another hit from Dirty Dancing–and Mary pulled Janine in for a hug a chaste kiss on the lips. “We should go back to our boys for now,” she said with a shrug. “Shouldn’t we?”
“I suppose,” Janine sighed. “But I’m glad I got a dance with you tonight.”
“Me too, love,” Mary said, giving Janine a light swat on the bottom. “Me. Too.”
