Have you read The Boscobel Tracts? It's a compilation of accounts of Charles' escape from Worcester published in 1830. The editor's intro calls the escape "by far the most romantic piece of English history we possess". Thought you might be interested! "Dark Angels" was the book, can't remember the author. It has Charles being verbally abusive to Catharine though which made me question finishing it lbr (AND IT WAS GUSHING ABOUT HIS BODY LIKE WOW LOOK AT HIS LEGS AND NELL WAS LIKE "LET'S HAVE SEX" AND HE FALLS ASLEEP AND STARTS FREAKING OUT )

Eurgh. Trigger warnings necessary then, by the sound of it.

Might look into it anyway though, I do kind of feel like I ought to read EVERYTHING EVER about Charles so I know what to recommend when people ask.

OK so the other day I was reading an historical fiction about Charles' court. I was just merrily reading along until I read the line "Charles was very naked and very drunk, as was Nell", and I started laughing so hard I thought I was going to pass out. At his deathbed, Catherine was crying so hard she passed out, and had to be practically carried away. SERIOUSLY CHARLES/CATHERINE FOR LIFE

I know.

I KNOW.

I mean, I think it was general upset rather than HARDCORE CRYING, but yeah. And of course, he'd cried buckets years before when Catherine almost died. They were pretty devoted to each other, really- considering how many mistresses he had, you'd think it would be a purely political marriage, but that wasn't the case at all.
