“nothing to apologize for,” jules soothed the situation over, dribbling hot sauce over his to-go omelette. slicing it into more palpable pieces with the edge of his fork, jules looked up from the egg ham and cheese concoction. noticing that he had made the youth uncomfortable, he put his fork down for just a moment. “hey, sorry. i didn’t mean to be.. off-putting. so you don’t believe in ghosts but you’re spooked because your nephew can? i don’t think i’m following along.” bringing the omelette to his lips, jules shrugged. “not busy but, you can go if you want to. don’t worry about it.”

“nah, i’m really not that shady. i wouldn’t spend my time trying to take from you. ‘i can fix that’ reminds me of holes. remember the guy who could fix everything? that was one of my favorite books,” she reached for his mug out of habit and sauntered over to the coffee maker. “how do you take your coffee?” she questioned, smiling over at the male as he introduced himself. “your name sounds familiar. i’m gracie,” she poured black coffee into the mug, then nodded towards the cream and sugar.
“good to know, i’ll keep that in mind if anyone ever asks me to describe everyone in town. i’ll just jot down ‘not that shady’ under your picture and it’ll be great.” julian paused as he let the mug slip from his grasp. “i didn’t know that it was a book,” he admitted watching her turn back on him. “as is, thank you.” untucking the cigarette from behind his ear, he placed it between his lips uncertain about how to react. “ that’s a lovely name, mine’s pretty boring. ” looking around for a no smoking sign but not finding one, he pulled out a lighter, tapping it against the counter as he tried to come up with a direction to take the conversation. “ do you smoke gracie? ” he wanted to be polite and did not know she shouldn’t because she had cancer.

“oh she’s beyond sassy – three going on seventeen, i swear. however, i don’t mind. she definitely gives me something to look forward to every day.” talia said, a small shrug of her shoulders following her words as he spoke up once more. “oh, no! the news that we ARE going to disney! she was excstatic, by the way. she wants to meet kristoff, her boyfriend.”
“sounds like quite the handful, the next big movie based on your life no doubt.” he had no children, but was infinitely amused by the fondness displayed by the dark-haired girl before him. “if you recorded it, those videos always go viral. i have no idea who that is, one of the dog humans? goofy’s cousin?”

“sometimes i talk a lot, i’m sorry dude. it’d be cool if you want to fix it later, but really i was just talking about my day. look!” she lifted her hand to show him and shrugged her shoulders up and down. “it’ll be alright. thanks for the tip though! my friend said to put mustard on it… so i guess i’ll just try all of the options out and see what works the best. wait – what’s your name?”
“it’s fine, like i said, just trying to differentiate if i need to be on guard or not. yeah, i can fix that.” the probably was silent as he surveyed her burn. “you should get worker’s comp for this, but let me know if the mustard thing works it sounds like something you read on a ‘at home remedy’ site written about people who don’t believe in vaccinations.” his mug was empty, but jules let his fingers drum along the side. “the name’s julian. julian woods. and you are?”

“are you trying to send me to jail?” he rose to his feet uncertain if if would be safer to try and stop her or push her and flee to another city. thinking better of it, he sat back next to his pile of roof tiles, lighting up a cigarette instead. “okay, have fun. you never saw me. i don’t know your name. if you end up on the news for slamming your head into concrete don’t remember me when you end up at a hypnotist for trying to uncover why you jumped.”

“i didn’t ask, but ghosts are real.” jules deadpanned for a moment, gripping onto the silence before cracking a smile. “kids are crazy, i’m sure it’s just some imaginary friend not a vengeful spirit about to tear your family apart.”

“today at work, i was given one of the hardest tasks – working the old, decrepit fryer to make an extra large batch of french fries. can we please just focus on the fact that this thing spits more oil than a broken down car? so as i’m sticking these frozen potato delicacies in the fryer, this thing literally spits the biggest blob of oil, lands on my hand, and now there’s a fucking burn the shape of texas. did i mention the table who got all these fries tipped me two dollars on a thirty dollar order? jesus christ. i need the money to go to disney.”
“that was a really.. long story. are you asking me to come fix the fryer but trying to trick me out of charging you by distracting me or are you just telling me about your day? either is fine, it’s just that i’m off the clock. oil is good for burns though, so just don’t let it dry out and your hand probably won’t just fall off.” bringing the mug of coffee to his lips, jules quirked an eyebrow in her direction before continuing. “i promise to tip you if i ever stop by, i know what the service industry is like.” he mumbled, wiping oil stained hands on his pants.

“i’m really sorry!” malia exclaimed, a remorseful smile on her face as she shuffled over to the other. “he never gets loose but i guess you just excited him,” the brunette explained as she bent down to scoop up the leash attached to her canine. “he didn’t…hurt you, right?”
taking a knee, jules scratched the friendly canine behind it’s ears as the somewhat spacey owner seemed to follow in pursuit. “don’t worry about it, love dogs.” purposefully ashing his cigarette away from the dog, jules shrugged. “of course not, you should be more careful though. in a country like this you might’ve gotten sued.”
