one of my favorite small moments in leviticus is the first church scene when naim looks back at ryan and he’s already looking at him and he doesn’t look away when naim looks. to lock eyes with the person you love across a crowded room and see they were already staring back is incredibly romantic on its own. but to not look away when you feel so much shame and secrecy about your feelings because you just want to keep looking at them is something so intimately romantic i’m going to scream.
leviticus (2026) but it’s ryan having an older sister who loves him so much but she can’t help him. she can’t save him from their parents, from the homophobia, she can’t save him from himself. all she can do is watch as her little brother shrinks in on himself as the years go by. less and less of him exists every time she looks at him. she left for uni, fled at the first chance, and she couldn’t take him with her. he cried himself hoarse for days when she left. she doesn’t visit the house, doesn’t get along with their parents. she misses him every day. she texts him every day. sometimes he replies. he loves her, he does. it’s just hard. being the one left behind. she used to wipe his eyes when he cried as a kid so their dad wouldn’t get angry. she’d hold him and sing to him as baby when he couldn’t sleep. he came out to her just before she left. ryan whelan who is loved beyond measure by a woman who has his same eyes and same smile. ryan whelan who runs away and ends up on a missing poster. ryan whelan who is never found, who never comes home. she never hears from him again.
cant stop thinking about how, not only is the entity caused by internalized homophobia, it is internalized homophobia. it is the physical manifestation of both naim and ryan’s shame and guilt.
there were so many scenes where i was on the edge of my seat because i couldnt be sure whether or not it was the real ryan/naim or if it was the entity, and im sure this was done on purpose by the production team; to instil fear in their audience so we can feel how ryan and naim did.
for example, the scene against the screen door where naim and ryan hold hands through the mesh. i had the instinct to yell at the screen because… what the fuck is naim doing….thats not ur bf thats a monster!!! so on and so forth. but then i realized that naim had to have known the risks of being so physically close and vulnerable with ryan in that moment, unknowing if it’s really him or if it’s the entity. and despite his uncertainty, naim continued to lean in, to get as physically close as he can to ryan, knowing it could be the death of him.
this movie has so many little treats ….i need to rewatch immediately
bloggers when they realize that in order to have romance they cant just reblog not to me not if its you richard siken cannibalism comparative parallel posts and engage in their favorite fictional media relationships on tumblr dot com and they actually have to make an effort to meet people

leviticus (2026) bones and all (2022)

the way the entity slashes ryan’s ear because naim had licked it before in the bus scene OH IM SICKKKKKKKK
big fan of characters with abandonment + attachment issues so profound that they leave claw marks in everything they touch but would sooner gnaw off their own leg than admit they just want someone to stay for once. in a totally normal well adjusted and not at all projecting way of course.

my life will forever be known as pre-leviticus (2026) and post-leviticus (2026)
although i do wish naim and ryan’s relationship was more fleshed out, i also kind of like how we don’t know much of either’s backstory, how long naim has been the “new kid” or how long he’s known the people in the town, because it seems like naim is uncertain of ryan and their subsequent relationship from the beginning. he questions why ryan is acting different from the persona he puts on at school and is shocked when he sees ryan and hunter together. he seems to have very little information on the town. the lack of establishing that information puts us in the same boat as naim. i think the audience being unsure of what exactly is going on between naim and ryan really sets us into naim’s perspective even more. we are just as unsure and unknowledgeable about ryan as naim is.
