"That's where you're wrong. It wasn't fate, it was me. I'd find you in any lifetime, Ellie Adams."
This book is based on the what ifs. What if I took a different path? What if I chose to turn left instead of right? It touches on parental choices and a mother trying to cope with her daughter not needing here anymore, a marriage at the end of it's ropes, parents trying to save their daughters marriage, and a daughter who does need her mom but doesn't want to ask for her.
Ellie and Jonah are on their way to tell their family that they are divorcing, which doesn't go well. When they return home from their trip and go their separate ways, Ellie has her week planned and how to go about with the divorce and everything (mostly) that comes with it. But then she wakes up the next morning, her parents are no longer in FL, in fact they've never lived there, and she is no longer married and can't seem to find Jonah. Through twist and turns and an alternate reality they find their way back to each other and decide that they want to give their marriage another go all while healing their other relationships in their lives with their loved ones.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I think the alternate reality of these characters, even though Ellie and even Jonah knew what was going on, was better. They learned and grew so much in those parts of the story that it was hard not to like it better. But, I guess, most would like the alternate reality more because it led to Ellie and Jonah being together again and Ellie and her daughter getting their relationship back.
