I feel like the reason a lot of people don't like hunter's inclusion in the show stems from how the fandom has treated him and how everyone in the fandom uplifted him and gave him more attention when everyone else in the show had the same qualities. him and amity both feel like they need to prove themselves to someone, him and willow both have the "half a witch" title and go through an arc about it, him and gus both have traits of autism with gus (imo) being a more clearer representation of it and yet the fandom always wants to talk about hunter more in these aspects when the owl house first came out and hunter was introduced I was about 14/15 and loved him cause he was the angsty white sad boy with #trauma and of course I cried when anything bad happened to him!!! but in retrospect I have complex feelings about his inclusion and how much screentime he got, but at the same time I'm not sure how much of it is my own reaction to how the fandom treats him or if its genuine problems I have with the show itself. idk!!
I feel like the show could've worked fine without him or if literally any of the main characters replaced him, and I definitely prefer watching season 1 because I love the dynamic of the original hexside squad, but I don't necessarily hate that he's included. I think I just hate the fans that only pay attention to the show when he's on screen (and just a little bit dislike when its really obvious who the writers favorite character is)
