Freyja (lit. "The Lady" in Old Norse) is the Vanir Goddess of the domains of Love, Sex, Fertility, Death, War, and Magic. She is a major goddess in the Norse Pantheon, and is widely credited with teaching the Aesir Seiðr, a longstanding tradition of fate-weaving whose practice goes back to women in late Iron Age Scandinavia.
Freyja has many associations, both within traditional scripture and modern pop culture and witchcraft. Animals associated with Freyja are cats (Her chariot is pulled by two cats, as shown above), boars (Her mount, Hildisvini, is a giant boar), and falcons (Her cloak, Valshamr, allows her to transform into a falcon and fly across the nine realms). She's associated with the colors White, Red, and Gold, and the traditional crystals associated with her are Amber (known as "Freyja's Tears"), Red Jasper, and Rose Quartz. Some flowers and herbs that are associated with The Lady are Daisies, Common Milkwort (known as "Freyja's Hair" in traditional Scandinavian), Columbine, Mugwort, Primrose and Roses. Her day of worship is Friday, and her associated number is 13.
Below are some things you can do to honor Her:
Create an altar, shrine, or protected space dedicated to Her and other Norse deities.
Donate to your local cat shelter or wildlife rehabilitation center.
Communicate with your ancestors through divination (tarot, pendulum, flame reading, etc.)
Honor any family members or pets that have passed on, especially cats and women, through placing daisies on their grave.
Improve and practice your craft in ways that are transformative or healing (glamor magick, mirror spells for self-reflection and/or protection, self-love spells).
Bathe or shower in floral lotions, soaps, and body oils, and dedicate your self-care to Her (write an incantation or prayer for your shower).
Set up a skincare routine dedicated to Her on your days off or Friday evenings.
Paint your nails while saying a prayer/incantation to Her.
Write a love poem for someone who you hold dear to your heart (Doesn't have to be a lover, can be a friend, family member, or even just for yourself).
Curate a playlist of love songs on your desired streaming platform. You can also listen to love songs when meditating or communicating with Her.
Collect gemstones and crystals associated with Her, such as Amber, Rose Quartz, or Red Jasper.
Dedicate bold and extravagant jewelry in your jewelry box to Her. Earrings, necklaces, or rings that have cat or magickal motifs are especially pleasing to Her.
Show a loved one how much you care for them. Give gifts that are reminiscent of the person (or people) you love most, call your loved ones daily or as often as you'd like, and communicate how loved they are to them.
While this is not a complete comprehensive list of everything, these are just some of the things that I do to honor Her. If there's anything on the list I've missed, feel free to reblog or comment, and I can make a part 2 if needed.
As always, when working with deities, make sure you are PROTECTED and GROUNDED. Cast a simple circle and practice thorough and strong protection magic first before doing any deity work.
A similar celebration to Lughnasadh for the Norse is Freyfeast/Freysblót.
Yngvi-Freyr is the god of many things and one is being the god good harvest, so naturally he is honoured during this celebration.
Bread is a very common offering to him.
My Granny is mainly a Celtic witch and will be making bread today, if I can snag a piece I will place it at my altar for him… until then he can have my bread crusts
I’ve also made a devotional jar for Yngvi. Adorned with one of my favourite crystals, moss agate, I’ve included some of the herbs you’ll find ready in August, as well as some seeds best to plant this month:

Another name adopted for this day is Freyfaxi. Which I have a bone to pick with 🫣
It’s named after a horse in Hrafnkell’s Saga, Freyfaxi, which he dedicated to Yngvi along with his other prized livestock and possessions.
Yngvi-Freyr was Hrafnkell’s patron god and he even achieved the name of Freysgoði (Freyr’s Goði (a prominent pagan leader))
Hrafnkell swore an oath he would slain any that would ride Freyfaxi without permission.
Besides him being a loyal follower of Freyr, and having his own settlement and a farm.. there’s no massive ties to the holiday. Like. At all. Hrafnkell also ends up becoming an atheist, albeit due to the consequences of his chaotic actions. But I don’t think it’s a very fitting name for the occasion….So I personally won’t be calling it that

The necklace of our beloved Freyja. Possibly made out of Amber, gold or gemstones. Brísingamen is often translated as something along the lines of ‘flaming necklace’. I’m not a gold girlie so when searching for my own, I went with amber, I think it best fits the fiery description 🧡

I get unnecessarily annoyed at posts that are like "as pagans, we don't...". I find that these broad overarching statements portray paganism as something that must be in opposition with mainstream organized religion, rather than something that can have a lot of similarities as well. as a norse polytheist:
I do worship gods, not just work with them.
I do ask gods for advice and help.
The gods I follow and spirits I work with do demand things out of me, that do push me out of my comfort zone.
I don't subscribe to a good v. evil dichotomy, nor do I believe that hostile forces are simply misunderstood.
I have no interest in larping vikings - I have no interest to get through things the hard way, and I do pray and practice magic to make my life easier.
