What if, after 9/11, Gerard left Jersey instead of starting MCR? After witnessing the towers fall, Gerard decides his life needs to change. He sets off across the country, finding a destination in San Francisco. A couple of years later, however, he gets a phone call, and has to go back home for Elena’s funeral. Being back brings up old feelings, like just how much he missed his brother, and a few new ones, like an unexpected crush on one of Mikey’s friends. And there’s also that band Mikey keeps mentioning…

Written for pennyplainknits‘s prompt on the bandom pretend dating festival: MCR high school AU. Frank as the most hyperactive fake boyfriend EVER. Gerard only ever saw Frank as his little brother's best friend, right? But Frank had a crush on him forever and ever. And when Gerard tells his cheating asshat ex that he is better off without him and he already has a date for Gabe Saporta’s semi-annual Not-Birthday Party, thank you, which is totally a lie, Frank steps up to the plate.

Frank gets in a fight and has to work a thrift store doing community service. There, he meets his co-worker Elena's elusive grandson, Gerard Way.

Summertime and the livin' is easy...

"No, it's just - it's all stuck up." Frank shuffles forwards on his knees and then his hands are in Gerard's hair. Gerard's laughter dies down abruptly. Frank's fingers are surprisingly gentle on his scalp, ruffling it up, carding through it. "We'd probably have to wash it first, though," he says thoughtfully.

Somewhere along the way Frank just started appearing in the studio doorway, sometimes with flyers for his band, sometimes - very, very awesome times - with coffee. Of course, when Gerard's In The Studio his head is in a creative place, not a talking and remembering place, so he can't really be expected to know what he has or has not told Frank.

He knows something else is going to happen; his life isn't always going to be this. He just doesn't know what has to happen for that change to come, for him to wake up and become an artist with an Etsy page and a home studio, and to never have to see a cubicle again.
