La fregola, come la chiamava mia nonna, è bastarda. Nasce per caso, chiacchierando con un’amica, passeggiando in centro, sbirciando una vetrina o visitando un blog. All’inizio t’intriga, travestita da desiderio innocente. Pensi di poterla tenere a bada: che sarà mai? Puoi sbarazzartene quando vuoi. Ma la fregola intanto scava, giù in fondo, fino allo strato deficiente del cervello. A metà strada è già un bisogno impellente. E in poche ore, a volte minuti, si è conficcata nei neuroni come una spina. A quel punto sei spacciata: chissene frega se la cosa che vuoi non ti serve o ti farebbe sforare il tetto della carta di credito (già messo a dura prova da una fregola precedente); che importa se hai già qualcosa di simile a casa; se poi a quella festa non ci andrai; o se questo oggetto lo userai al massimo una volta. Che sia la fregola di un vestito, una scarpa, un invito, una crema anticellulite, una torta, una vacanza, un uomo o un baule vintage, l’importante è soddisfarla oggi. Punto. Come insegna Rossella, domani è un altro giorno. A fregola, as my Grandma used to call it, is a bitch. It catches you unawares while you’re chatting to a girlfriend, hanging out in town or checking out a cool shop window or blog. At first it seems innocent enough, everyone needs something new sometimes right? You can handle it, you can give it up whenever you want. But the fregola doesn’t surrender…it keeps worming its way into the deepest depths of your brain. Before long it has transformed itself into a fundamental human need. And within a matter of hours, sometimes even minutes, it’s lodged in your head like a bullet. And at that point you know it's all over. It doesn’t matter that you don’t actually need it, that it will send you over your limit on your credit card (you already were anyway thanks to last week’s fregola), that you already have one, that you’re never actually going to go that party or that you’ll probably only ever wear it once. Be it a dress, a pair of shoes, an invitation, a cellulite cream, a cake, a holiday, a guy, or a piece of furniture, you have to have it. Period. As Scarlett used to say, tomorrow is another day.
