This September, Free Women Writers, a grassroots efforts that started with a small book, turned five years old. We couldn’t have survived, published hundreds of pieces of poetry and prose, organized events, and publish another book for women in Afghanistan without our 150 writers in the country and diaspora. We’re so grateful to all our volunteer members and our dedicated writers. For International #DayOfTheGirl, we’re celebrating some of our favorite girls from #Afghanistan. Negin Khpalwak is a conductor leading the Zohra - the first all-girl orchestra in Afghanistan. Soraya Hosaini, 25, is a high school graduate who has become a beacon of hope for the women of her community. For the past seven years, she has been teaching literacy and other classes in a remote area of Daikundi Province where many girls are deprived of opportunities for education. It all started when she turned her house into a home school, after she realized that there were no schools in proximity to her community and other nearby-villages.
