Representing the next generation of South African accordion excellence, Hano Krige will perform at the SAFRA Heritage Gala 2026 | Erfenisgala, celebrating the rich and diverse Free Reed Sounds of Mzansi this Heritage Day

The accordion, concertina, harmonica, bandoneon, harmonium and melodica may differ considerably in appearance, sound and musical use. However, they all belong to the free-reed family.

A free reed is a thin, flexible tongue fixed at one end. When air passes over it, the unattached end vibrates freely and produces a note.

The term therefore does not describe one genre or musical culture. It describes a sound-producing principle connecting instruments used in boeremusiek, maskandi, famo, tango, classical music and numerous other musical expressions.

The Free Reed Sounds of Mzansi celebrates the accordion, concertina, harmonica and other free-reed voices that connect communities across South Africa and beyond our borders.
