For many South Africans, Mzansi is more than another name for South Africa. It is an affectionate word that can evoke home, familiarity, belonging and the distinctive character of our country.

The word is derived from umzantsi, meaning “south” or “the southern part.” This gives our gala title another important dimension: it locates us within the wider Southern African region and its remarkably diverse musical cultures.

The Free Reed Sounds of Mzansi celebrates the accordion, concertina, harmonica and other free-reed voices that connect communities across South Africa and beyond our borders.
