The difference between everyone and Azriel in relation to Elain is that he actually takes ACTION.
We have the big talkers, Lucien and Nesta, who proclaim 'I have to get my mate back!' and 'she's steal and whore herself out for Elain' and neither one actually does anything.
It's Azriel who takes ACTION and actually gets Elain back--not Lucien, not Cassian, not Rhys, not Nesta.
Instead of muttering under his breath, proposing that Elain be locked up in a lunatic asylum and wringing his hands, Azriel decides to figure out what is happening with Elain, and does, in fact figure it out.
He gives her his knife, saying the words that he doesn't actually say: this will protect you the way I would protect you. He doesn't toss her just some random knife hoping for the best. He knows that he would be weakening himself, but he also takes the action of actually protecting her and arming her to the best of his abilities under the circumstances.
When he sees her at Solstice, he nearly knocks Feyre off her feet in order to get to Elain.
When he wants to make her happy, he doesn't just suggest or propose something. It's not enough to tell her where the garden is. It's not enough to casually pat her on the back and say that her gardening plans are good. He DOES. He TAKES her to the garden. He sits with her and listens to her.
When he sees her rushing around with food and prep for Solstice, he steps up and basically orders her to relax, trust him, and go take care of herself.
When she wants to put herself Ina dangerous situation for which she is not trained or ready, he goes against the IC and says 'no' because he knows that she is not ready for needless heroics.
He never announces that he is going to do something. There are no platitudes. He doesn't declare that he is willing to die for her! That he would 'burn the world down'.
(After Cassian and Azriel met Nesta and Elain for the first time)
Cassian: No, you don't understand. I have known this male for five centuries. I have seen him disembowel beasts without blinking. But the second that pretty girl in the blue dress walked in? He turned into a poet.
Mor: (Already grinning) Elain?
Cassian: Elain. He stopped functioning. His brain melted. She looks up at him with those big, dewy eyes and goes... (Pitches voice absurdly high and breathy, fluttering his eyelashes like a manic butterfly) "Oh, excuse me... can you truly fly?"
Azriel: Stop talking.
Cassian: (Ignoring him) And normally, Az would just grunt. Maybe a nod. But no. He straightens his spine, puffs out his chest like a peacock, and gives her this... look. (Drops voice to a ridiculous, deep, sultry purr) "Yes... Cassian and I hail from the Illyrians. We are born hearing the sooooong of the wiiiind."
Mor: He did not?
Cassian: HE DID! I swear on the Cauldron! He turned into a traveling bard! And then Elain... oh, you should have seen it. (Clasps bands, tilts bead, gazes adoringly at the ceiling. Squeaky, swooning voice) "Oh my... that is very beautiful."
Azriel: ...
Cassian: She was eating it up! She looked like she was going to faint! And then she whispers, (Trembling, fragile voice) "But is it not frightening? To fly so high?"
Mor: (Howling with laughter) Oh gods.
Cassian: And Azriel... that Bastard... he leans in closer, trying to look all mysterious and tormented. (Narrows eyes, drops voice to a gravelly, dramatic growl) "It is sometimes.. if the current drops away. But fear not. We are trained so thoroughly that the fear is gone before we are out of swaddling."
Amren: Swaddling?
Cassian: SWADDLING! He's trying to seduce her with talk of baby blankets! "Oh yes, Lady Elain, I was a very brave baby in my swaddling cloth."
Azriel: (Head in hands) I am going to murder you slowly.
Cassian: (Whispering dramatically to the room) "The wind sings to me, Elain. It tells me you look nice in blue."
Ever since I started playing Nod-Krai in Genshin, and I saw Flins and Lauma, I knew instantly I wanted to commission Elriel as them! Both aesthetic and personality wise they are so perfect—Lauma and Elain as the sweet yet determined nature girlies and Flins and Azriel as the quiet and fierce warriors. So, how are we feeling about the possible ACOTAR 6 announcement coming our way?? Honestly, I can't decide if I believe it or not haha for the time being, you can find me wearing my clown make up
In HOFAS, for all of its terribleness, SJM showed a LOT of Azriel. Arguably, more Azriel than was even 'needed'. Azriel was almost as prevalent as Rhys was in ACOTAR.
And she presented him in a way that, I think, she sees him. And honestly? is he a super attractive character? I think that's debatable. He is short-tempered at times, kind of permanently semi-annoyed, closed off, snappy, indifferent at other times. He didn't strike me as the regular romantasy MMC--the banter that GAs love to wax poetic about isn't actually present very much. He is not the cavalier, banter-y, indestructible sort of hero. In some ways, he is almost off putting. And I feel that SJM was so heavy handed with him on purpose. As if to prepare people for what to expect, but also, as kind of a warning?
He is almost the exact opposite of what a large part of the fandom made him out to be. And SJM said, no, this is actually how this character is. What you saw is him. What you saw in the bonus chapter is him. Again, what GAs absolutely refuse to acknowledge and see in their beloved bonus is exactly what SJM showed in HOFAS --Azriel WAS annoyed with Gwyn, he WAS lying to her, he MADE himself appear more accommodating. That's how he is. With most people. The day after Solstice he WAS aloof, angry and silent. In HOFAS, he is mostly aloof, annoyed, and challenges both Bryce and Nesta out right when they act up. His reaction to the unfavourable mention of his mother was swift and angry. So much so that Nesta nearly cowed in front of him and apologized. Most of the time, Azriel is avoidant, secretive and resentful.
Which is why his attitude towards Elain is so stark. Essentially, he melts around her. He softens. He laughs. He is a blade that is suddenly wrapped in a marshmallow and he loves it.
I think that buried under the heap of Headcanons, fantasies, misinterpretations and willfully obtuse misreadings of canon text the 'real Azriel' emerges. A cantankerous, stiff, solitary, lonely and tired warrior. Not a bantering, ribbon-cutting dudebro. Azriel is much more Malachi Vize than Casteel, or even Rhysand.
The ONLY time we see him crack, his facade soften, his eyes brighten is when he is around Elain. Sorry. That's just how it is.

You know what I find interesting, and I know this point has been brought up throughout the years a lot, but every casual reader I know is rooting for Elriel.
I have two friends who read the series after ACOSF had come out, read the entire thing, and every time I talked with them about it, they brought up BY THEMSELVES how excited they were for Elain and Azriel's book.
One of them even said that it's their favorite pairing so far.
And like, if casual readers, who have no connection to the fandom or the social media wars and all that, can tell they are the next couple, doesn't that say a lot about the other ships?
Like, every casual reader that hasn't spent years reading headcanons and fanfics and things to support their ship, knows what ship is next. It's not even a discussion for them. Because the other ships have nothing going on for them.

The Request
Nyx: Mama! Mama, I want a sister!
Feyre: (Laughing) Oh really? Did you hear that, Rhys? He thinks we need another baby.
Rhysand: (Grinning from across the room) Is that right? You want a little sister to play with?

Nyx: Because I’m gonna marry her. But I have to get big first. So you have to guard her for me. Okay?

Nyx: Yuh. Keep the bad boys away. Even the ones with wings.
Azriel: I will do my best to keep the winged bad boys away, Nyx. You have my word.
How to Be Cool
Nyx: Uncle Az? Can you teach me to do the shadow thing?
Azriel: The shadow thing? You have to wait for your powers, little bat.
Nyx: (Stomps foot) No! I need them now!
Azriel: Why the rush?
Nyx: Because Auntie ‘Lain likes you.
Azriel: Does she?
Nyx: Yuh. When you walk in the room with the smoke, she goes sighhhhh (mimics a dramatic swoon). And her cheeks go pink. Like a strawberry.

Nyx: If I have shadows, will she sigh at me too?
Azriel: Trust me, Nyx. You don’t need shadows. You already have her wrapped around your little finger.

Elain: (Kneading dough in the kitchen) Can you pass me the sugar, sweetie?
Nyx: (Hands her the jar) Auntie ‘Lain... are you and Uncle Az in love?
