Some of you know I've been writing a young adult novel for the last 8 years (off and on). it's called A Bird in the Heart.
In 2018, when I started writing it, I had been making music for 10 years already and my career had gotten nowhere. I wanted so much to make a difference in the world with my art, but it looked like that was never going to happen with music.
Me being me, I thought, "I know what I'll do! I'll write a book! I'm sure to make a difference that way! Traditional publishing is a much safer bet than a music career!"
I had such grand dreams of this book inciting young readers' political awakenings. It was going to be my big anti-ICE and anti-police statement (while also being heartfelt and hopeful and funny).
It's far from polished. I imagined going through a traditional editing process on it and fixing various issues (such as pacing). In spite of its flaws, I've decided to post the first 8 chapters of it on AO3, because it seems senseless to keep it buried when the whole point was to hopefully make a positive impact with it.
(My listeners may notice overlap with the themes in my music, and sometimes even words or phrases.)
I may post more of it, but for now, here's a chunk.
