It is a well known fact that there is dimorphism in dragons and that this dimorphism causes vast differences in how dragons can get around. Females are flighted and males are stuck walking. When it comes time for babies to up and leave their nests dispersal, not shockingly, differs between the sexes. 

Females that have reached maturity will fly from their birth nests to find territory of their own. It is known that they travel long distances until they find habitat suitable to settle but it was always assumed that once their territory was established they would then take on mates. This is not strictly the case. It has been observed that young (and sexually mature!) females will mate with males before they have an established territory. It was from this we learned they can store sperm for later fertilization. This implies that she may begin laying once she establishes a den, and ensures that there will be little inbreeding. It is also hypothesized that females have an instinct to fly as far from their birth nest as possible before they begin mating. This is assumed because dragons of the same species can be found over a series of large ranges, as climate conditions and nesting site preferences seem to be the only factors determining a dragon’s decision in territory establishment.

Drakes on the other hand do not establish their own territory and cannot fly. Young drakes are observed to move in groups of related individuals. This might be due to increased survival both while wandering and when a new female is encountered. Females dragons that have just established their den are known for their aggression, both towards surrounding towns and other creatures. It is speculated that her rampages and scent are what attract males to the area and it is observed that she shows them the same hostility. Should a group of brothers show up at her door step, it would not matter if a few died during their introduction, so long as one brother survives, their lineage will continue through him. Interestingly enough, male groups that join into well establish dens are thought to undergo the same sort of initiation by the drakes already in the den. The leading theory is that new male groups will try to kill any offspring or eggs encountered before their arrival, and the males within the den defend their brood until survivors of the rogue group are killed or submit.
