A jack of all trades? Nah, of course not! I am a Hoe of all hobbies
Finally bought some dye and have been having so much fun with optical color mixing. I decided to start with cmyk primaries to get some vibrant color options.
So far I've only mixed up the main batch of colors, but I'll split them up and create a palatte of tints and shades once I have access to a scale again.
I don't have any fancy tools and have been blending the fiber by hand, so it's probably best I have a forced break for the sake of my fingers. Once I'm done I should have a very useful set of 57 2g swatches to play with! (Plus 5 more for a set of grayscale swatches)
If I'm still up for it, I might repeat the whole thing with my classic red, yellow, blue primary dye set. For a truly massive set of heather swatches.
I'll create a comprehensive guide to all the color mixes and my process once I'm done, but in the meantime here's a mixing guide for the colors I've already done!
The ratios are presented in the same order as the wool swatches in the photo above it. I didn't simplify any of the ratios so you'll have to deal with 2:2s instead of 1:1s, oops.
For anyone curious, I used brilliant yellow, deep magenta, and caribbean blue from Dharma dyes on their corriedale wool for my base colors.
Finally finished weighing out and blending all the tints and shades! Each color got a swatch mixed with 50% white, and 50% black.
Plus some pure black and white mixes to compare to my cyan/magenta/yellow midtone gray tint and shade.
I really like the oil slick quality of the color based grays!
This is a great experiment! Also a good reminder for folks who don't like or don't want to get into dyeing that there are options for blending colors with commercially dyed fiber!
Tour de Fleece has been going well this year. I'm happy to not be on an organized team but rather engaging and sharing with the groups I frequent the most and loosely following the Tour.
Here are some yarns I've been working on since the beginning of the month! Some are long-term projects that are finally coming to fruition, and some are new. I'm really pleased with my progress in making yarn, learning new techniques, and hybridizing techniques to work better for my spinning style.
As an aside, I want to say that I'm incredibly disappointed with the main TdF group that's still hosted on Ravelry and their choice to use genAI banners and welcome images throughout the team threads. Visiting the group and seeing that really solidified my choice to participate elsewhere.
Most recent progress pic of my glorious loon sweater. It’s a little old, it has sleeves now!

Not my official "post for this yarn, specifically", but it turned out really pretty pre-wash. Photobomb by Chel, who enjoys her summer concrete time.
TdF Day 14
I actually managed to get up in time and spin before work! Both singles spun up and ready for plying.
plying day! If I get both mini skeins and this blellow spin plyed up today, I’ll be at 400g finished yarn for tdf and will have met my stretch goal of spin at least as much as I spun last year (now that I’m right next to the goal I can say it).
And the first mini is plied 😊
Plying the romney/mohair fractal. This wasn’t my most consistent spin ever but it looks like I’ll still get some decent yardage out of it!
definitely not winning any consistency awards for this one 😅
What if I ignored all my spinning and knitting and sewing WIPs and started a fully new spinning project... what then...

you have to be kinder to people with cognitive decline.
you have to be kinder to people who were always this way, too.
you have to be kind. you have to be kind.

Bring Back Blogs!
Do it! Do it now! Get into your old account or create a new one. Settle on a theme. You can change it later.
Write something and post it.
I need all of us, including myself, to realize that we're out here in the world having these wonderful, deep conversations about our respective niche hobbies, and they're not being archived anywhere.
Search engines may not work properly anymore, and search engine optimization (SEO) is a mess that I refuse to even poke with a stick. Half the time your blog is going to get deprioritized by Google, but that doesn't mean we can't be out here sharing for the love of the game. Just get out there and talk about what you've been deep diving into today or this week. Don't pay attention to whether anyone reads it or not. It's out there, and it's findable if someone really wants to find it.
The algorithm replaced checking your faves' blogs, but you can still do just that. Put that shit in your bookmarks bar and visit them regularly like it's 2009. I bet it looks better there than on Instagram anyway. And you won't have 85 promoted posts vying for your attention.

the thing about fruit flies is that in the abstract, they live peaceful and irreproachable lives nibbling on overripe fruit and its attending microbes, but practically speaking they awaken some sort of primordial rage within me. Get off my bananas you little fucks
Don't get me started about fungus gnats. Get off my plants you little fucks.

While people deserve to be paid for their labor, the nebulous "they" simultaneously convinced us that we had to monetize our hobby writing* or we were contributing to people not getting paid for their labor.
Heaven forbid someone wants to write* publicly for love of the process and finding folks with similar interests.
Now we're inundated with newsletters and blog posts written like marketing copy in order to fit as many affiliate links as possible, and those of us who just want to read and yap on the internet without being accosted by ads and sponsored "content" are screaming.
This can apply to any type of creation, digital or physical.
I keep crocheting squares. I don't have any tangible plans for them. They're just nice to make. I can do a couple on my lunch break, or several while I'm watching TV. They're not "post-worthy," but I feel like that doesn't matter so much here. Tumblr feels like a cozier space. Folks ramble about whatever they're currently interested in, and it's not ninety percent marketing copy. I've been on Instagram for a long time, but it doesn't feel like home anymore. Here, I feel like I can talk and post about spinning and weaving, but also books and technical editing.
This itty bitty purple one is my favorite so far.
