FIRECRACKER.

gaze  shifts  between     him  and  the  book  a  few  times,  but  it  lands  on  him  just  in  time  for  her  to  notice  the  small   falter   of  his  expression.      (   he  may  have  hidden  half  his  face,  but  she’ll   always   read  his  eyes.   )      she  decides  not  to  say  anything  about  it,  even  though  her  curiosity   burns   and  forms  a  lump  in  her  throat.   she  assumes  it’s  none  of  her  business,  she’s  been  accused  of  being   invasive   before.            ‘      first  time  for  everything,  y’know.      ’            spoken  quite  distractedly   ---   she  bites  the  inside  of  her  cheek  to  hide  her  own   doubt   and  suppress  the  need  to  clear  her  throat,  or  get  up  and  leave.   an  abrupt  question  leaves  her  lips  before  she  can  realize  it,  and  she  immediately  regrets  it.            ‘      y’think  someone  a  lil’   simple   like  me  would  be  able  to  wrap  their  mind  ‘round  it  ?      ’

a  cheek-splitting  dimpled  grin     brightens  up  her  face,  finger  taps  his  nose  lightly.            ‘      since  like,   forever  ?   obiously.      ’            she’s  feeling  childish,  sue  her.   she   steals   the  book  before  it’s  even  hit  the  surface  of  the  table,  and  examines  it.            ‘      prettiest  boy   i’ve   ever  met,  really.   ----- since  when  do  we  read  philosophy  ?      ’
