(if theyβre true friends theyβll forgive you, and youβll still be friends)Β
and make new ones on the road.Β
You can leave your family.Β
You can depart from your hometown,Β
your country, your culture, and everything you know.Β
You can sacrifice.Β
You can give up your $5.00 a cup morning coffee,Β
you can give up air conditioning,Β
frequent consumption of new products.Β
You can give up eating out at restaurantsΒ
and prepare affordable meals at home,Β
and eat the leftovers too,Β
instead of throwing them away.Β
You can give up cable TV,Β
Internet even.Β
This list is endless.Β
You can sacrifice climbing up in the hierarchy of careers.Β
You can buck tradition and othersβ expectations of you.
Β You can triumph over your fears,Β
by conquering your mind.Β
You can take risks.Β
And most of all,Β
you can travel.Β
You just donβt want it enough.Β
You want a degree or a well-paying job or to stay in your comfort zone more.Β
This is fine, if itβs what your heart desires most,Β
but please donβt envy me and tell me you canβt travel.Β
Youβre not in a famine, in a desert, in a third world country,Β
with five malnourished children to feed.Β
You probably live in a first world country.Β
You have a roof over your head,Β
and food on your plate.Β
You probably own luxuries like a cellphone and a computer.Β
You can afford the $3.00 a night guest houses of India,Β
the $0.10 fresh baked breakfasts of Morocco,Β
because if you can afford to live in a first world country,Β
you can certainly afford to travel in third world countries,Β
you can probably even afford to travel in a first world country.Β
So please say to me,Β
βI want to travel, but other things are more important to me and Iβm putting them firstβ,Β
not,Β βIβm dying to travel, but I canβtβ,Β
because I have yet to have someone say they canβt,Β who truly canβt.Β
You can, however, only live once, and for me,Β
the enrichment of the soul that comes from seeing the worldΒ
is worth more than a degree that could bring me in a bigger paycheck,Β
or material wealth, or pleasing society.Β
Of course, you must choose for yourself, follow your heartβs truest desires,Β
but know that you can travel,Β
youβre only making excuses for why you canβt.Β
And if it makes any difference,Β
I have never met anyone who has quit their job,Β
left school, given up their life at home, to see the world, and regretted it.Β
None.Β
Only people who have grown old and regretted never traveling,Β
who have regretted focusing too much on money and superficial success,Β
who have realized too late that there is so much more to living than this.
