TL;DR: Lan Wangji and most other Lans regularly sneak around disguised as rogue cultivators so they can break Lan rules in secret — then the other sects find out...
Throwback to that idea I had way-back-when of a Canon Divergence AU where it turns out that the Lan Sect actually can't follow all 3,500 rules all of the time, and so in desperation they were forced to come up with the idea (excuse) of establishing a spy network where they would then be required to go undercover without the fancy headbands or the vibrant white clothes or, most importantly, the excessive rigid rules...
Left: Liu Haikuan (LXC) in 'The Long Ballad'
Right: Wang Yibo (LWJ) in 'Legend of Fei'
---
(Not because they need a spy network or anything — the spy network is just an excuse. In reality, too many Lans were breaking too many rules and having to be punished all the time, and it was risking ruining their reputation.
Afterall, if even the Lans can't follow all of their rules, how can they expect the guest disciples to? Something had to change...
And so, instead of simply changing the rules or easing up on them a bit (the obvious, rational choice), they instead established a spy network where Lans under too much pressure from following so many rules would be allowed to roam free, virtually uninhibited, on the sole condition that when they returned they would bring with them some new information about what's going on in the world...)
---
Only the other main sects know vaguely of the Lan Spy Network, and even then only because the Lan Sect seemed to have an endless well of information that they definitely shouldn't have and no one for the life of them can figure out how or where they're getting all this information from...
So, obviously the Lans must have some sort of spies — though, considering their well-documented inability to blend in (what with their white clothing and headbands and strict rules that must be followed at all times without exception) the other sects were under the impression that their spies were animals or something, rather like the Wen birds.
If not animals, then civilians or rogue cultivators that were employed by or indebted to the Lan.
(Under no circumstances were they expecting the Lans themselves to be the spies.)
---
This AU was largely inspired by two things:
That scene in the library where Lan Wangji told Wei Wuxian to "piss off." —People don't typically slip up and just say a word or phrase that they've never even thought of or said before... More likely, LWJ has said it before, but was trying to restrain himself from doing so while in "Lan-mode".
A while ago, I watched this other historical drama that also starred Wang Yibo (LWJ's actor), except that I didn't realize at first that it was him because he looked so different... different clothes, different hairstyle, different behavior... They were both historical dramas, but he looked like two completely different people! To the point that I didn't even recognize him!
For reference, here's a side-by-side comparison of Wang Yibo in The Untamed vs Legend of Fei:
If you saw Guy-on-the-Right walking around town all smiley and smug you would NOT think, "Is that the great Hanguang Jun?! What is he wearing?!" No, you would instead think, "Wow, that rogue cultivator is pretty hot..."
I imagine they still keep their headbands on their person when in disguise, just hidden away so they're not visible... Most likely either wrapped around their wrist or their ankle and then hidden away under an arm cuff or a boot.
Little baby Lans are introduced to ~Undercover Work~ slowly, first by being brought out in pairs with an older, more experienced Lan while they're still young enough for their subdued behavior to be dismissed as just a "shy, well-behaved child" — but old enough that they won't slip up and say something they shouldn't, like, "Hi, I'm Lan Zhan."
Lan Wangji was of course first brought out by Lan Xichen, who reassured him that, "Yes, you can run if you want. Yes, you can shout and make noise. Yes, you can slouch. Yes, yes, yes..."
---
Whenever someone goes undercover, the other Lans will tell Outsiders that the reason they're unreachable is because they're "in seclusion".
While Lans do actually go into seclusion at times, it's not nearly as often as the other sects are led to believe. Far more likely, they're actually running around ~undercover~ and in-disguise, while seclusion is just being used as an excuse as for why no one can see them or get into contact with them.
---
Edit: Regular check-ins are of course required to keep track of everyone, much like a "Warm Body Count" in a college dorm.
Additionally, I forgot to mention this before but there are of course some rules that they are still expected to follow, namely the ones that everyone would be expected to follow — such as, for example, no murder.
No assault, no kidnapping, no destruction of public property... Just the stuff that most people would agree should never be allowed. (At least, not without good reason.)
---
Edit: Not all of the Lan disciples know about this. Su She, for example, has no idea.
It's only the inner disciples who are genuinely expected to follow all the rules all the time that are given this option of running away for a bit...
(They know that if they allowed everyone in the sect to be in on it, they would never be able to keep it a secret from the Outsiders.)
One of my favorite headcanons for The Untamed is the idea that the real reason the Impure/Unclean Realm in Qinghe is such an impressively impenetrable fortress is because despite only Nie Mingjue being the ~official~ sect leader, he and Nie Huaisang secretly run the sect together...
(Well, it's a secret to outsiders — all of the Nie disciples of course already know.)
They each play to their own strengths (because they have very different strengths) and then collaborate when it comes to the more difficult or more important matters...
And with the two of them working together in unison, the Nie sect is virtually undefeatable.

Another Wen Kexing-centric Crossover AU set in the CQL universe that blatantly takes advantage of the fact that his name is *Wen* Kexing:
In this version, Wen Yan, courtesy name Kexing, is the oldest sibling of Wens Qing and Ning.
When he's very young, Wen Yan tags along on a routine trip with his parents (him being the only sibling old enough to be allowed to come along) only to never return...
His parents wind up getting murdered on the trip — courtesy of Wen Ruohan — and this is where things start to really diverge...
In one version, it's the Ghosts that kill his parents and so he winds up being raised in the Ghost Valley (much like in canon) only to eventually return many years later to get his revenge on Wen Ruohan...
In the other version, it's Wen Ruohan himself who takes Wen Yan in and raises him (much like he canonically does with Wens Qing and Ning) until he, once again, eventually gets his revenge on Wen Ruohan.
(Perhaps Wen Ruohan takes in Wen Qing and Wen Ning as well in this version, but distracted as he is by Wen Kexing he doesn't pay them much mind and so they mostly get left alone...)
Either way, Wen Kexing spends the majority of his life pretty unknown to most of the cultivation world, right up until he is finally strong enough to get his revenge on (i.e. kill) parent-murderer Wen Ruohan.
(NMJ: "I'll never trust a Wen! Wen Ruohan killed my father!" // WKX: "Oh, same hat." // NMJ: "What.")
It is at this point that Wen Kexing —
— who has since also killed Wen Xu, Wen Chao, and possibly also Wen Zhuliu (maybe Wen Zhuliu was the one who killed their parents on Wen Ruohan's orders?) —
— is then made the new leader of the Wen sect.
I also think it would just be really funny if this all happened during the indoctrination.
Think about it! Suddenly everything gets really suspiciously quiet for a few days and they're all mostly left alone, right up until one morning when they're all summoned and they're waiting for a while and Wen Chao isn't showing —
— and then finally some dude with a fan struts down the steps and introduces himself as the new Wen sect leader, tells them that Wen Ruohan and his sons are all dead and also, by the way, you're all free to go home now, so sorry about the whole indoctrination thing... 😬 Does anyone need medical care? We'd hate for you to succumb to your injuries on the way home... 🥺
Like. Can you imagine?
(Having this happen during the indoctrination would also conveniently mean that most everyone is still alive — except for the old Lan sect head, but we don't really care about him...)
jiang cheng, absolutely convinced that wei wuxian would make a far better sect leader than he ever could, comes to the conclusion that it would be far better for everyone involved if he were to just disappear...
whether that means he runs away, or he tries something far angstier than that, is up to you...
What if Jiang Cheng went blind sometime during the 13/16 years, but he was able to hide it from the other sect leaders because Zidian was capable of working similarly to Xiao Xingchen's sword by sensing resentful energy so he could still fight.
And so with the help of his loyal disciples — who covered for him and backed him up whenever he encountered something he couldn't get out of, cover up, or explain away — he was able to keep the other sect leaders none the wiser — for a whopping 13/16 years.
Zidian is also a large part of the reason why Jiang Cheng tends to go after demonic cultivators personally — because Zidian's ability to sense resentful energy makes him exceptionally good at tracking them down no matter how hard they may try to hide...
what if instead of shunning demonic cultivation, the jiang sect embraced it?
afterall, in the wake of the massacre of lotus pier they'll need all the help they can get to get back on their feet and win this war, even with their vastly diminished numbers.
and while wei wuxian might have suffered severely from using demonic cultivation — that was without a golden core.
perhaps, with the support of a strong golden core combined with the iconic jiang clarity bells, as well as regular check-ins and cleansing sessions to purge their excess demonic energy — not to mention the guidance of wei wuxian, the grandmaster of demonic cultivation himself, the jiang sect would be the leading experts in demonic cultivation throughout the entire cultivation world.
other sects and rogue cultivators might try to attempt it, but compared to the jiang sect their attempts would be pathetic and amateur at best and more than likely end up with the cultivator in question either dead or mad.
this would also have the bonus effect of the jiang sect not having to rely solely on wei wuxian — if the entire jiang sect were capable of demonic cultivation, not just wei wuxian, then they would undoubtedly be considered a significantly formidable sect despite their recent near annihilation — far different than their social/political position in canon.
and, with this higher standing, they (jiang cheng) would be far better equipped to protect wei wuxian against the other sects.
and who knows? maybe when wei wuxian discovers the wens he might be more willing to trust jiang cheng to help him with them now that he knows that jiang cheng has not just accepted but fully embraced his decision to practice demonic cultivation.
I was thinking about how if an entire sect was secretly plagued with vampirism, it would be easier to hide the weirder symptoms because they would be dismissed as a sect-wide tradition or as part of that sect's culture, and as such wouldn't be questioned.
Made fun of, maybe — but questioned? No, that would be incredibly rude.
Originally, I wasn't thinking about any sect in particular, but when I tried to think of which sect I could best see being secretly forced to follow the Rules of Vampirism, the answer became obvious — rules.
What sect already follows a ton of seemingly pointless rules? What sect do others often complain about how completely rigid they are in their insistence on always following said rules, without any exceptions?
What sect would people not even blink at twice if they insisted on never entering a person's home until they've been invited in? What sect could easily get away with refusing to ever eat garlic? Or outlawing mirrors?
-> Gusu Lan.
Please, join me in considering an AU where the Lan sect is full of vampires, and Qinghe Nie isn't the only martial sect secretly plagued by something the other clans would consider "evil".

Star Trek AU (inspired by the popular headcanon about Vulcan hands and their "sensitivity") where Bones accidentally ends up becoming Spock's reluctant knight-in-shining-armor by virtue of being the only person on the entire Enterprise who actually knows enough about Vulcan anatomy to know precisely why touching a Vulcan's hands is considered such a taboo —
— because as much as Bones detests the hobgoblin he's not going to just stand there and watch as people attempt to (unknowingly) molest the idiot...
---
This idea was intended to be Gen but if you're interested in romance I can see two ways this can play out — one with Bones/Spock (Spones) and one with Kirk/Spock (Spirk).
Click the "Keep reading" to know more.
For the Spones AU I can see Spock slowly falling for Bones as he repeatedly defends/protects Spock, even though Spock knows for a fact that Bones doesn't like him. The fact that Bones is willing to do all this for someone he doesn't even like, maybe even hates... Spock slowly starts acting more amicable and appreciative towards Bones, which —
---
1. Spones
— like two voice-mimicking dolls repeating a phrase back and forth as the words get more and more distorted —
— Spock's newfound amicable-ness towards Bones leads to Bones becoming more amicable in turn, and the more they learn to tolerate each other, the more time they spend together (often after Bones has just saved Spock from some asshole by claiming to need him for something and then dragging him off), the closer they find themselves becoming...
Spock probably falls in love first in response to Bones' reluctant knight-in-shining-armor routine, while for Bones he falls slower, as he gradually finds himself becoming more and more fond of Spock now that they're no longer at each other's throats all the time, and are thus finally able to have a real conversation — or many conversations — leading to the realization that the other isn't so bad afterall...
2. Spirk
If you're fond of misunderstandings and jealousy, then you're probably gonna love the idea I had for the Spirk AU:
Basically, Spock and Bones' sudden closeness/amicable-ness, combined with the way Bones keeps jumping to Spock's defense and randomly dragging him off to who-knows-where, leads to the rest of the crew becoming convinced that the two of them are in a (secret) relationship.
And at first Kirk can't figure out why them being together bothers him so much — shouldn't he be happy for them? Shouldn't he be relieved to see his two best friends getting along? But it's not until he finally identifies his feelings as jealousy that he suddenly becomes aware of the crush that he's been unknowingly harboring for Spock.
Once he realizes that, he starts forcing himself to pull away from Spock — he forces himself to stop all the casual touches and unintentional flirting he hadn't even realized he'd been doing until then — now that Spock and Bones are "dating" he doesn't want to accidentally get in between them or somehow damage their relationship.
Meanwhile, all of this is of course incredibly confusing for Spock who doesn't understand why Kirk is suddenly distancing himself from him — acting more formal and less familiar with him, avoiding touching him, dropping the casual banter and late-night chess matches —
Did he do something wrong? Why is Kirk suddenly pulling away from him?
Cue a whole host of misunderstandings between these two idiots in love that all eventually culminates in a grand reveal — perhaps someone, maybe Kirk, finally mentions Spock and Bones' supposed "relationship" in front of them, only to be met with immediate confusion and denial — which is then of course followed by a grand love confession by either Kirk or Spock, which is immediately and enthusiastically reciprocated.
I love when a fic author takes a side character and turns them into a Secret Badass.
Like they'll do it in such a way that it's still somehow at least mostly canon-compliant by having said character acting behind the scenes and hiding their skills for whatever reason.
And the best parts are the reveal scenes where the other characters finally realize how much they underestimated them...
"Secretly a Badass" is seriously one of my absolute favorite tropes of all time.
