a hard truth
is often
the most forgiving
yet
the most avoided
an honest word
is freeing
yet
mistaken for a loss
a lie
steals your reality
sweetly
sugar-coated
craving
you wouldn’t even recognise
when the lie
becomes your truth
i could lie
and say i don’t mind
it’s not a problem
i could choose
to make you feel better
and tell you
it’s okay
it’s all good
maybe i’d believe it too
words spoken aloud
have a way
of feeling true
almost
too convincing
be careful
with your words
when i think about
strength
it’s a word
to define those
strong
brave
accomplished
the pain you endured
admired
an inspiration
to some
the real strength
i aspire to
is in the kind words
you choose
to give back to your mind
how about we watch the sunset
until the crickets start calling
the air turns slightly crisp
i’ve got three blankets
to keep us nice and snug
how about a hot chocolate
with marshmallows perfectly melted
it’ll keep your hands
so toasty
there’s something special
about sitting under the stars
don’t you think…
maybe we stay here
for a while

can i get your attention
just for a minute
see how the trees are touched by the sun
the golden-hued leaves
sway in the wind
feel the warm breeze
against sun-kissed cheeks
hear the sounds around you
small waves against the rocks
water gently meets the shore
close your eyes
stay here
while the birds quietly sing along
breathe in the sea salt air
let it drift through you
now tell me
where would you like to go
we can go anywhere
what if your mind
was like a colouring book.
which colours are you using?
are you carefully
colouring between the lines?
can you see
the picture unfolding?
what if i told you…
colours signify your mood.
maybe you don’t need
to colour between the lines.
there doesn’t even
have to be
a clear image, really.
there were never
any rules.
so,
do you finally
understand?
your thoughts
don’t control you.
neither do
the words of others.
there’s an innocence
in truth.
so why
is truth
targeted
as the enemy?
what if i told you
you could fly?
it’s simple.
you just have to try.
you’d tell me
impossible.
right?
but look at the birds
migrating
beautifully.
you’ll only regret
not trying.
right?
that’s when you say,
we’re not made
to fly.
ah.
so why do you keep
asking me to fly?
there she goes again,
off with the fairies.
they said.
of course,
i smirked.
they know
where the magic is.

i think i liked you better
when we first met.
you know…
when you only lived
inside my head.

1000 tabs open.
that’s usually how people describe a busy brain.
they’re not wrong.
it’s not quite how i’d describe mine, though.
let me show you around.
hold my hand so you don’t get lost.
it’s nothing fancy.
there tends to be quite a lot of distractions.
just an endless room filled with filing cabinets.
the first ones i want to show you are my favourites.
you can tell they’re well loved.
the kind of keepsakes you could never throw away.
opening them feels like arriving home to freshly baked cupcakes coming out of the oven.
then there are the ones that desperately need an upgrade.
files are bursting out the sides.
the drawers barely close.
i’m usually rummaging through these when i desperately need to find something mid-conversation.
it’s like looking for that one top i’m sure i owned, only to end up with my whole wardrobe on the floor.
sometimes i find it.
sometimes i find something close enough.
if i’m really lucky, a 90s hit suddenly starts playing on repeat instead.
housekeeping’s sick of these ones.
oddly enough, right beside them are the cabinets that always make me feel out of place.
they’re perfectly organised.
almost intimidating.
like they’re judging me for spending another day in my pyjamas.
i assume they’re meant to be in charge.
they’re doing a terrible job.
i visit them every now and then, convinced they must have been important once.
i never really understand why they’re organised the way they are.
so i quietly close the drawer again.
some cabinets are shoved all the way at the back.
they’re an eyesore.
too damaged to open.
too heavy to move.
like closing the spare room door because you don’t know where to start.
my therapist likes to pry these ones open.
inside are crumpled pages.
ripped pages.
missing pages.
somehow she has a way of making them a little easier to look at.
oh…
and then there are the really big cabinets.
the ones that make my stomach drop.
they’re supposed to alert me when there’s something important to do.
the alarm’s faulty though.
sometimes it works.
sometimes it doesn’t.
sometimes it goes off and i can’t switch it off until i’ve done the thing.
i feel like i’m about to miss a flight.
only to realise it’s telling me to find my passport at three in the morning.
but before you go…
you have to see these ones.
the shiny ones.
i may have bedazzled these.
they’re impossible to ignore.
they’re always locked.
i can never seem to find the keys.
oh…
but when i do…
tell me…
where would you like to go?
we could go skydiving.
start a business.
drive across the country.
honestly…
anywhere.
they’re full of ideas i’ve been saving for the day i find the key.
not everything makes sense to file.
so they’re left in little dysfunctional piles.
they make perfect sense to me.
sometimes i pick one up and a memory appears out of nowhere.
like those flashbacks that creep in just as you’re about to fall asleep.
or suddenly i’m trying not to laugh at the worst possible moment.
the cabinets aren’t the only attraction here.
come on, buckle up.
sometimes the lights turn off.
the whole room rearranges itself.
it always seems to happen at the worst possible time.
suddenly i can’t find anything.
it’s like driving at night and turning the music down so you can see your turn.
except here…
i can only turn it up.
but recently…
the puppeteer moved in.
there are cabinets i never noticed before.
we’re still learning how to get along.
some days it’s better.
some days it’s harder.
but i imagine if all the filing cabinets could talk,
they’d probably say,
“thank fuck she’s medicated.”
they labelled me
quiet
shy
careless
weird
rude
dramatic
—
they told me
so much potential
try harder
smile more
apologise
stop being silly
—
they diagnosed me
anxiety
depression
autoimmune disease
postpartum blues
PTSD
—
it didn’t
quite fit.
—
the words.
“i’m surprised
no one noticed
before.”
“high functioning,”
they said.
—
AuADHD.
that one
fit.
—
i had the pleasure
of meeting
myself.
mummy,
would you rather
be the first person
on the toilet
or the moon?
—
mummy,
that car’s pointy.
—
i can see
a rainbow.
there’s pink
in a rainbow.
some people
just can’t see it.
mummy…
that makes me sad.
—
mummy,
when i grow up
i’ll have
a lunchbox.
and…
can i have
a cupcake?
—
mummy,
there’s a dragon
on the roof.
—
mummy…
you’re actually
kinda good
at that.
i thought about it
then i remembered
to pay that bill
i thought about it
then i saw
the laundry
i thought about it
then realised
i was late
for an appointment
i thought about it
then remembered
to buy cat food
i thought about it
but heard the beat
of my favourite song
in between it all
i thought about you

if i wrote you a love story
would you be surprised
that it wasn’t like the rest
no fireworks
no instant chemistry
it was the one
you didn’t see coming
not in a dramatic way
just quietly
genuine
it took its time
so slowly
you never thought
to reject it
it felt safe
understood
you were just you
no questioning
because
when you know
you know
it was always
around me
the artwork
that lets
my imagination
run free
the music
that reminds
my body
how to feel
the kind strangers
who make the world
a little more forgiving
the girlfriend
who is the human version
of the sun
the guy
i grew up
next door to
whose support
never depended
on how often
we spoke
the work colleague
who always found
a way
to be even more
unhinged
the guy
i’ll never know
who caught me singing
my heart out
to only love can hurt like this
in the car
i was just
in my own world
and my world
was quietly
becoming
my life
