she was a lonely only child with a head full of daydreams and a precocious vocabulary fueled by library books. marcie was raised by her grandmother, after her mom dipped out of the picture shortly before her second birthday. said grandmother taught her how to sew, nursed her love for it with patterns from joann’s and saving up to buy her the best sewing machine for her tenth birthday (marcie cried, but she always cries). had a hand in making all of her halloween costumes from age six onward, and designed her own prom dress (not that she had a date). moved to the big city from her quaint jersey suburb to study costume design at tisch--upon graduation she took an internship in l.a., upon which she was immediately swept off her feet by a sweet-talking startup ceo in her new social circle. her grandmother passed away suddenly a week after marcie’s wedding, and from there on l.a. just kept dishing it out. she and her husband had differing opinions on the precedence her career should take, and the stress of trying to juggle a demanding marriage and a demanding newly minted assistant position exhausted her--but she really thought she could make it work. four months ago, her husband had her served with divorce papers while he was away on a business trip, and texted marcie asking her to be out of the house by the time he got home. as of now, she’s very much in her jenny slate “accept my life is over and move back into my parents’ house” phase--only, she has no parents to move back in with, so she made for new york (the only place she thinks she’s ever really felt like herself) and phase one of picking up the pieces has been moving into a mediocre apartment and taking on a job she could only get via a former professor’s recommendation that she didn’t have enough pride to turn down.
