Where does one even begin?

Oreo? Oreo Oreo? Oreo Oreo Oreo? No. This is the MOST Oreo Oreo. Or, as I keep accidentally calling it, The Most Oreo of Oreos.

Someone had an idea. Some magnificent human in some home office or large concrete building had an idea. This idea not only encompasses tasty treats but an entire Oreoverse. A thing that EXISTS. But how? Why? Does it matter?

As the foremost reviewers of Oreos on this planet (can’t speak to what happens on other planets) I felt it not only right but also my solemn duty to review this new specimen for this much neglected Tumblr... blog... thing. I just need to dust off a few of the graphics we made oh those many innocent years ago, take a few photos, eat a few of these creations and see what happens, right? Right.

Packaging

I’m just gonna come right out (of the closet) and say it: fuck this is good. Someone spent A LOT of time on this and it is (not it’s but IT IS) gorgeous. Did ya notice the “MOST” has an “O” that’s filled in but “OREO” has two empty “O’s?” That is a deliberate choice that was probably debated for weeks. WEEKS. I also respect their dedication to the current Oreo logo as the only blue point of reference on this packaging. And the QR code that is in an Oreo. As someone who works in marketing, a well placed QR code is, as the kids say, a slay. Design note: the outline of the QR code was not transparent so you can see it is a different white than the creme of that Oreo. Hire me, @oreo ?

Only thing I dislike? I think the arrow that shows you where to open the package looks a bit off.

Cookie

It’s an Oreo. It tastes like an Oreo. It rules. Still great. 10/10 on the Oreo scale. Oh right, we do things in 5′s here at forseriousoreveiews.tumblr.com. 5/5.

Creme

THERE’S SO MUCH. THEY PUT SO MUCH. MUCH. DROWNING IN IT.

It’s great. It says “COOKIES-N-CREME FLAVOR CREME” but that’s just more Oreo mushed up and put into an Oreo. I love a double stuff. Dedicated readers know I especially love the creme quantity in a seasonal Oreo (see Halloween, Holiday, etc.). 

It’s good. It tastes like Oreo creme but like... better cause it’s got Oreo cookie in it. As Bernie Mac once said in his pivotal role as Frank in Ocean’s Thirteen: “‘nough said.”

Consumption Styles

Just eat that thing. Dunk it in milk. Eat it. Twist it apart. Eat the creme. Hell, stack like sick of ‘em together to make the most most most most most most Oreo. I don’t care. It tastes great.

Taste

Oh dang. I scooped myself. It tastes great. Like it’s so much Oreo I can only eat one of them but daaaaaang, when I do, so satisfying. Eat ‘em. V. good. 10/10. DAMN. Did it again. 5/5

This is a you got your chocolate in my peanut butter you got your peanut butter in my chocolate situation that I am way in favor of.

So. Oreos. Delicious. Can’t beat the classic or double stuf, ya really can’t, but these try. There are so many damn weird Oreo combinations these days (I’m looking at you pistachio thin Oreos) that I was beginning to wonder if we’d ever have any normal combination again.

I mean, normal is completely relative given Oreo’s storied history of weirdness; however, I think you know what I’m getting at. When I saw these in the store the other day I just knew I had to eat one. Or two. Or three. Okay, it was really just two since I am trying to watch my diet.

These are pretty darn good! Really! Do you like peanut butter and chocolate mixed together? You do? Of course you do! I only know one person who genuinely doesn’t: my mother. But she won’t eat these anyways. So, let’s get down into the peanut butter on these babies...

Packaging

Beautiful! Look, it even says new. Also, I like the little treatment on the details of the cookie. I know that it’s a graham flavored cookie and that there is chocolate and peanut butter flavored creme in the middle. Perfect. I’m not expecting a vanilla cookie or some other weird cookie I know what I’m getting. Plus: the picture of the pie helps establish what exactly you are getting. Mostly peanut butter with just a topping of chocolate.

Cookie

Yum! Graham is better than the weird uh-oh Oreo ones in my opinion. Also because it’s a pie flavored so graham only makes sense.

Creme

Hello peanut butter with a hint of chocolate. Like I stated before this is mostly a peanut butter flavored cookie as a whole so you should know what you’re getting here. This is the one little thing I have with this cookie as a whole: I wish there was a tad more chocolate to it; however, the packaging doesn’t lie about what you’re getting so I totally get it.

Consumption Styles

Let’s just be honest here. I ate it. I tried the creme, I tried the cookie with the creme, I tried just the cookie... Just take a bite out of this thing like you would a bite of pie. All of it put together is when it’s at its best.

Other Comments

I said before I only had one issue but I remembered another: inconsistency. Below these few sentences you’ll see a picture of the cookies and oh man is the creme filling all over the place. Some have not nearly as much as others some have way too much some have seemingly melted out? Which I don’t remember seeing on Oreos before. Maybe it’s the peanut butter creme? Either way, yo Nabisco, get on this.

Taste

I love this one. I really do. I’m not gonna go buy a bunch of packages but this isn’t an Oreo that will sit there and go uneaten (i.e. kettle corn and cherry coke, ew). So, get these while you can, enjoy them, maybe eat a peanut butter cup instead if you want more chocolate but I like these ones a lot. Four and a half Oreos out of five.

In honor of National Cookie Day, which was a week ago, I have written this review for all of you to enjoy!

If you don’t like chocolate chip cookies, I don’t know if we can be friends. Well, we can be friends, you just don’t get to eat the world’s best cookie with me. I don’t have many friends, so excluding those who do not like a certain type of cookie seems sort of harsh; however, if you don’t like this I will not judge you in the slightest. We should probably get into why...

As many disagreements as I have with my father, he makes the best chocolate chip cookies. No one is quite sure how he does it; but, he takes the Nestle Tollhouse recipe and makes the best damn homemade cookie you can have.

I also love Mrs. Field’s chocolate chip cookies something fierce. In over the two and a half decades of my life, I cannot count the number of times my grandmother has taken me to the mall and gotten me Mrs. Field’s chocolate chip cookies. I wish it were more often! But she lives in Reno and it makes that sort of trip difficult.

The short of it: I love chocolate chip cookies. This cookie does not live up to a chocolate chip cookie.

Packaging

Okay, we’ve been over this a few times now but it bears repeating: the cookies that are better have the seal on them. That magic flavor seal that has saved many a package of Oreos from being discarded when stale. It’s a great looking package. Bright blue with a huge chocolate chip cookie right there telling you what this should taste like.

Cookie

This is one of those rare Oreos where they have changed the cookie part of this Oreo. It is a blonde Oreo; however, it has a different pattern to it. They threw s little bit of chocolate in it to try and make it more chocolatey chippy. It’s not bad! It tastes fine! It really isn’t anything special. It’s just... fine.

Creme

It’s also just fine! This isn’t something I would go seeking out on its own really. It’s fiiiiiine. Definitely different than a regular Oreo. Which is what I would expect according to the package it’s “Choco Chip Flavored Creme” wait... Is it just the creme that is supposed to be chocolate chip cookie flavored? This Oreo is somewhat confusing... But it’s not bad! It isn’t. I promise.

Consumption Styles

Eat this thing however you want, it will always just be fine. Dunk it in milk, split it apart, eat it, it will always just taste fine. Seriously. Just fine. I would REALLY prefer just to eat this thing whole just because both tastes on their own are fine but together they are just a tad better. Something about the parts coming together to be a better whole.

Taste

Like I said, this thing is better as whole... just.. no matter what kind of chocolate chip cookie you compare it to... it doesn’t really taste like one. It sort of tastes more like a store bought, Chips-a-hoy, cookie more than anything else. That’s the sort of chocolate chip cookie I tend to avoid. I prefer the homemade kind, or even the dough bought and baked kind. This Oreo is fine. It’s fine. It’s not amazing it’s just fine. When compared to a chocolate chip cookie of my choosing (the Nestle Tollhouse cookie dough that was the easiest to bake, not what I would ultimately choose) it just doesn’t compare. As an Oreo? It’s combination of cookie and creme combine to make something better than either asset would stand on its own.

It’s that time of year! My favorite time of the year! Fall.

And you better believe Oreo is on board with this season, which means Jake and I have some new cookies to track down. Very exciting. I love fall.

That being said. I hate candy corn. Every single year, without fail, I tell myself, “You should try candy corn again! Maybe something has changed! Maybe you’ll love it!” and then I try one single piece of candy corn. And it’s always a mistake. 

But candy corn Oreos? I don’t hate them. 

I bought these and then put off trying them for a few days. Then in a spur of the moment decision, I tried one. It wasn’t the worst. 

But let’s break it down a little.

Aesthetic: The packaging is right on brand with the Oreo name. I am bummed that a lot of the Limited Edition cookies don’t come with the Peel Back Freshness Seal opening system. I do like that the Limited Editions come in smaller packs that the normal cookies, so I feel less committed when trying weird cookies. The cookies themselves this time are a work of art. Okay, that’s probably too strong of phrasing, but I do really like them. The cream is half orange and half yellow, which is pretty cool and in line with the candy corn concept. 

Cookie: Not much to say here. It taste just like the golden Oreo we’ve come to know. I used to not be such a fan of the golden Oreo, but it’s grown on me. I think I tend to like it more with the different flavors as opposed to the tradition creme. 

Creme: It wasn’t too bad, but by itself it tastes much more like actual candy corn, just without the weird waxy texture. 

Overall cooke: I like it. Not my favorite thing in the world, but it’s a tasty treat. (Never let me use that phrase again.) The cookie helps balance out the creme, into something resembling candy corn, but in a less awful way. 

Now that I’ve been sitting here writing for a bit, I have discovered that these cookies do leave a pretty similar after taste in my mouth to actual candy corn. This, I am not a fan of and is probably contributing to my overall score of two and half cookies. 

I know what you are probably thinking: what on this earth has Oreo done this time? I thought so as well at first hearing about these. In fact, I believe I uttered multiple swear words upon finding them in the grocery store… As that meant I had to review them; however, I can report back with better news than I thought I would have to give on them.

Because this is one of those special flavored Oreos, there will be two scores at the end of this review: One giving my general score on what I thought of the flavor, and another based on if the flavor of the Oreo matches the flavor of the original thing, in this case, Swedish Fish.

Packaging

That bright blue attractive packaging as (almost) always! The marketing/design team is often very on point. The Oreos always look good. But! Something is immediately noticeable and different about this limited edition Oreo. No resealable package! No flavor seal or what not. Do they not have confidence that when someone eats one of these they are going to want to eat one again? Who knows!

Cookie

With this cookie, you, oddly, have the classic “chocolate flavored” (just takes like an Oreo…) cookie. With Limited Edition cookies like this, from what I remember you usually get the yellow/blonde colored Oreo. With that cookie, you tend to get a much stronger creme flavor when munching into the Oreo. So, on its own, the cookie part is great.

Creme

Oh boy, here it is, the “Swedish Fish flavor creme.” Well, uh, it kind of has that taste? Eating a real Swedish Fish and then simply eating the creme… The creme tastes off. It tastes somewhat like chemicals if that makes sense. To me, it tasted what I think a red vine tastes like. Slightly off and weird.

To be frank, this creme just does not hold up on its own at all. It’s kinda gross. After I ate the creme I would immediately follow it down with the chocolate wafers left over. Just couldn’t do it.

Consumption Styles

DO NOT BREAK THIS COOKIE APART AND CONSUME. I REPEAT DO NOT. Just bite into it like you would any other cookie. Nom and chew and swallow and not bad! The cookie is fine on its own but the creme is not. And you definitely need both chocolate cookies to sandwich that creme together.

I wouldn’t dunk these in milk either. Soggy = not good.

Taste

Taking a bite out of this thing and I was surprised how decent it actually was. I could even go so far as to say it’s good. I don’t mind eating these when I just bite into them. Eating them any other way makes them… not so good. But this is not a bad cookie! Somehow the Oreo flavor mixes fairly well with that “Swedish Fish flavor creme.” It works. Is it the best cookie I’ve ever had? No, not at all. Certainly not my favorite Oreo either; however, I’ll gladly work my way through this package though I probably won’t buy another.

To get this For Serious Oreo Reviews train going, we thought it best to start where we believe it all began: The Original/Classic Oreo. As Oreo as an Oreo can get. Now, just so we can clarify something right from the start, this isn’t going to be the basis with which we will judge all other Oreos, this is just a good way to get us started. We’re going to do our darndest to not to compare and contrast. We’d rather judge each Oreo on its own aspects.

Bex and I will probably have very different ways of reviewing. I want to also make it clear that these review styles will probably change and evolve as we munch on and figure out what exactly this is. My review won’t be a compilation of different scores based on different aspects (I really hate that); however, I thought it would behoove myself to be somewhat organized with my thoughts.

So, The Original Oreo, let’s go!

Packaging

I am an enormous fan of the Easy Open Pull Tab and the freshness seal that comes on many packages of Oreos these days. Opening it is incredibly satisfying. That crisp smell of an Oreo cookie wafting up into your nostrils as that fresh Oreo smell permeates the air is simply delightful. 

The Oreos are arranged in neat and tidy rows with a few gaps that left me slightly disappointed. When I open a package of cookies I expect the package to be stuffed to the brim; however, many experiences similar have left me well aware this is nothing but the norm.

Cookie

This is probably my favorite part of the classic. That cookie. That uniquely Oreo taste that isn’t quite chocolate but distinctly Oreo that no rip off has ever matched. That delicious crunch of the wafer as you bite into it is nothing but satisfying. It’s hard to describe it without comparing it to other cookies. Many cookies are just not good hard. I love the chewiness of fresh chocolate chip cookies and sugar cookies. This is the one cookie that I am totally cool with having that crisp to it. In fact, I’m not a huge fan of soggy Oreos that have soaked in milk for far too long.

Creme

And here’s what makes an Oreo an Oreo. That creme in the middle. Milk’s (supposedly, I have yet to ask it) favorite cookie. The creme in the middle of these two cookies is simple yet satisfying. If anything this is where this Oreo starts to lose me. It kind of disappears in the classic. The taste of the cookies overpowers what creme lay between them.

Consumption Styles

Simple crunch: I would say just biting into it is perhaps my favorite way to eat the classic. It tends to get a little crumbly and break apart when you bite into it but what’s happily snacking away without a bit of a mess?

Twist apart: While this may diminish the overall enjoyment of the taste of the Oreo put together, this is nothing short of satisfying. I love twisting Oreos apart if not just to see if I can get the creme cleanly remaining on one of the two cookies.

Dunk: Ah yes, milk’s favorite cookie enters a glass of cold milk. While I see the appeal I’ve never been one for soggy Oreos and I really hate seeing all the little crummy bits in the milk after the fact. I’ll do this once in a blue moon with an Oreo; but, I vastly prefer them on their own with a glass of milk on the side to wash everything down with.

Taste

Is this where I can come down a little hard on this cookie? I think there’s something missing. I bite into it and eat it and it just doesn’t taste like enough to me. For a cookie that has creme in the middle, I expect a little more. The creme is overpowered by the cookie (which I still think is quite good); however, it’s just not tasty enough for me. When I’m picking out a cookie the original Oreo is not one I would run to first. If it’s there I will totally snack happily away on it! But I don’t think it’s one I will buy over and over again.

There’s a lot one can say about the classic Oreo. It’s the one that started it all and inspired so many knock-offs and flavors. I think Nabisco was right to expand the line but keep the original. It’s a go-to for many Oreo snackers and I can see why. Simple, yummy, and always a treat. I’m going to give this a three and a half out of five. It’s good but not quite there for me.

Final Score

How do you review a classic Oreo? This is a cookie I’ve been eating my whole life. I don’t have a memory of my first one. (Although I do remember having the realization that 2+2=4 while taking Oreos apart.) It’s also hard not to compare this classic to other Oreos (namely Double Stuf). As hard as it sounds to review, I’m going to do it anyway. Here goes nothing.

My strategy today is going to be to eat three Oreos with three different techniques: breaking them apart and eating the cream first, eating them normally, and dunking in milk before eating. 

Breaking an Oreo apart is great. You get extra sugary goodness from the cream. But I will say, the cookie part isn’t that exciting by itself. Jake and I actually just had a conversation where he made me question my whole life. He suggested that Oreos aren’t really chocolate flavored. It blew my mind a little bit, but I think we landed on the fact that they are at least vaguely chocolatey. The cookies alone aren’t anything to write home about, but the cream is extra delicious alone. This creates some dissonance. Happiness sandwiched between two lackluster cookies. 

Just straight up eating the cookie gives you a good blend. There aren’t the same highs and lows that you find in the first option. Here I find myself thinking, “This is a cookie that I am eating. This is a good thing.” 

Dunking a traditional Oreo in milk is the best, especially when you get it just right. It gets all gooey and tasty. The cookie and cream flavors just blend together so well here with the assistance of the milk. It’s like an awkward middle school dance. Everyone is split up where they comfortable, only hanging out with their close friends. But then, then that one song comes on (the milk in this weird metaphor) and people start dancing and blending their groups. This may be the worst metaphor I’ve ever written, but I’m sticking with it!

When it comes right down to it, I like Oreos. I’m a fan. Classic Oreos aren’t at the top of my snack list though. Overall, I’m going to give them a solid 3. I like them, but I’m probably not going to seek them out, and I definitely prefer them with a nice glass of milk to dunk them in.

Imagine a situation. Two friends with 1,271 miles between them. They share a mutual appreciation of writing, the internet, and Oreos, but tend to not fully share opinions. They also tend to commit to jokes and ideas with full steam even if other people have no clue what they’re doing.

This is the result of that exact situation.

What are we doing?

We’re reviewing Oreos. We will be telling you our unfiltered thoughts and opinions on all things Oreo. We’ll start with the classic, basic Oreo, but we won’t stop there. We’re here to try every Oreo we can get our hands on. Yes, even the Lemon Oreos that make Bex cringe every time she sees them. We’re going to keep it simple. Most Oreos will get one score from 0 to 5. (And yes, we’re using halves even though Jake wasn’t super excited about it.) We’ll give you a breakdown of our thoughts on the cookie, the cream, the appearance, and whatever else we find notable. Certain Oreos will receive a second score (also 0 to 5) based on how much they actually taste like what the package says they should (i.e. Do Birthday Cake Oreos really taste like Birthday Cake?(Side note from Jake: No, they taste horrendous)). Sound good? Doesn’t matter. We’re doing it.

Who are we?

Bex

Bex lives in Florida. She works at a non-profit. She lives with her cat. She loves Youtube, coffee, and talking about how she’s a Midwest/90s kid. In her spare time she is teaching herself to not fall of her longboard while simultaneously listening to Podcasts and playing Pokemon Go. 

Currently, Bex has S’mores Oreos in her apartment. 

Her favorite Oreo memory is teaching her fellow camp counselors the joys of dipping Oreos in peanut butter.

Typically, she prefers dunking the cookies in milk before eating, but she see the value in all Oreo methods.

Jake

Jake lives in Illinois. He works at a hospital. He lives with his fiancé Tommie and their cat. He loves video games, Legos, and talking about television shows that shouldn’t have been canceled (Save Studio 60 Save the World). In his spare time he is learning to play the ukulele.

Currently, Jake has Chocolate Oreo Thins, Double Stuf Oreos, Choco Chip Oreos, and Blueberry Pie Oreos in his apartment.

His favorite Oreo memory is taking apart and restacking the Oreos his parents would pack in his elementary school lunches. 

Jake doesn’t subscribe to one Oreo method, but instead prefers to do whatever feels right in the moment.
