Forrealism Artist Joaquin Newman featured in The SABR Journal of Baseball Arts
Forrealism Artist Joaquin Newman has been painting calaveras (skeletons) for over 15 years as part of celebrating the culture of Dias de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in California. His art was recently featured in The SABR Journal of Baseball Arts, “Turnstyle” to accompany the stories that relate these artworks and baseball with spirit of honoring ancestors, family, and memories related to baseball and the Chicano tradition of “Los Muertos.”
Turnstyle is the journal of baseball arts and literature produced by SABR's Baseball and the Arts Research Committee. Turnstyle combines poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction with baseball-themed art and illustration. In Issue 2, Turnstyle features an exploration of the art of Joaquin Newman, an Oakland-based artist who combined the Mexican tradition of calaveras (skeleton paintings for Day of the Dead) with baseball cards for a series of paintings, one of which graces the issue's front cover.
