“Always a plus.” She chuckled, before throwing herself into the couch with a sigh and bending to unlace her shoes. “Did we get any mail today? Was there a package?”

“We got mail, but no package,” Cole replied, "Yours is on the counter.” 

“Did I tell you about Daphne?”

“Who the fuck is Daphne?”

“You work at that dragon place, right?”

“If you mean the Sanctuary, then yes. Why?”

“Did you cook? What’s that smell?” She sniffed the air as she came in, dropping her purse onto a chair with a sigh. “It smells good in here.”

“Yeah, ramen,” Cole replied with a shrug. “It’s probably about the only thing I can cook without burning. So congrats, our kitchen won’t smell like smoke today.”

Ember rolled her eyes, “She doesn’t mean that. I’ll talk to her.” She didn’t especially want to be between her brother and and his ex, but if it meant both of them being happy again, she would do it.”

“Oh, she was pretty clear about it,” Cole replied.

“Good. Besides, I’m not nearly as over protective as Mom.”

“Don’t get me started,” Cole replied. “I’m still pretty sure they waited so long to have another kid before Xavier because of my shit kidneys. Mom also is weirdly obsessed with me talking to her about everything, which I guess is understandable, just a big pain.” Cole never really spoke to anyone, especially about his kidneys, even when it happened, which is probably why he also almost died when it happened and no one expected it.

“I’ll try,” Wes promised. “That good enough for you?”

Cole sighed and nodded in agreement. “Yes, I guess I can deal with that.”

“I thought the lungs came in a package deal.” Elgin teased. “I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself. I’d hate to have to take care of another baby.”

Cole rolled his eyes at Elgin’s comment. “Just keep you mind focused on Luce,” he replied. “There’s no need to worry about me. How is your job going?”

“Okay, okay. But you just need to understand that my wanting to look out for you doesn’t mean I don’t think you can’t take care of yourself. Looking out for each other and having each other’s backs is just what siblings, especially big brothers, do.”

Cole let out a breath through his nose. “It’s just, I spent a lot of my life being poked and prodded, and treated like I was glass, I know you’re my big brother, but I really need you to calm down the over protectiveness, I appreciate it, bbut it really is no needed. A regular amount is just fine.”

“I appreciate it, really.” He smiled at the thought, getting excited. “I could give you a percentage, if that would help.”

“No it’s fine, if I could get your number or business card or something?” Cole questioned. “Just so I can send my boss your way.”

“I thought you were used to the smoke, what with the dragons and everything.” Elgin teased. “Ooh, mom made the cake? You found my weakness. I haven’t had a mom cake since the last birthday.”

Cole rolled his eyes. “Just because I’m used to it, doesn’t mean I like it. Besides I don’t need more smoke than I get, and it’s safer at the sanctuary, we have spells and masks and shit. At home it’s just there. I already have crap kidneys, I don’t need crap lungs too.”

Wes sighed. “Look, I’m sorry about that, okay? You’re my brother. I love you and the thought of anything happening to you freaks me out more than I care to admit and because of that I know I can get a little over protective and bossy. And right now, I just want to spend time with you because I care about you.”

“I just need you to trust me that I know how to take care of myself. I’m not that thirteen year old kid anymore,” Cole replied. “I know my body way more than I used to.”

“Come on. All I want is some time with my little brother.”

“What so you can boss me around?” Cole questioned. He may have been still a bit angry from the presidential ball.

Elgin pulled Lucille’s scarf up to cover her face one more time, making sure she was snuggled up and warm. “She doesn’t want me to hold her, so I go to the park and put her down, and the first thing she does is fall face first into the snow. And then she screams.” Elgin gave his daughter a bounce before holding her, face forward. “How’s your festival?”

Cole let out a small laugh. “No offense, but I would love to see that. Well only if snow was less cold,” he replied. “It’s fine, I just got here.”

“Oh, for the lov– Jesus!” Jerking awkwardly, Blaise reached out and grabbed onto the closest thing to her in an attempt to catch her balance, unfortunate enough to find out that that was a human being. “Sorry, sorry– I haven’t…I haven’t skated in awhile.” 

Cole caught her when she grabbed onto him. “It’s fine,” he said. “You alright?”
