Like with max it's very obvious to see bcs he has few favorites and he's loud about it so you can the warmth he has for Charles just leaking out but I just love how even with Charles who is like popular kid chummy with everyone you can clearly see a specific brand of fondness he reserves for max??? There are so many reasons the dynamic between Max and Charles is compelling to me from a purely non-RPF lens. The karting lore, the way they form perfect narrative mirrors, the way a championship battle between them felt inevitable for so long (still crossing my fingers on that one. If it never happens, it will feel like the worst sort of unfinished business). The long rivalry with flashpoints from karts all the way to F1, and the way that rivalry turned into respect and fondness. The way they trust each other on track enough to become pseudo-teammates if it's to their mutual benefit (i.e., vs. the McLarens). All excellent stuff!

But what really compels me is the sense that they were meant to be important to each other, a constant in each other's lives. Maybe not in any definable, formal way. Maybe just an awareness that "this guy is different from the other karters I grew up with, the other rivals I race against." As you point out, the way Max and Charles act together, talk about each other, and keep their lore alive is very specific. I.e., they almost never mention karting against any other guys (Pierre, Esteban, George, Alex, etc) or knowing them soooo well. They've been in each other's orbit so long, and for most of that time, their careers were intertwined (Jos predicting Max would fight Charles in F1, Max saying he wanted to race Charles another 10-15 years after Austria '19). They are also so aligned in how they drive and think about racing—to the point that when they do get to battle or share a podium (and debrief after!), they act like it's exhilarating, almost joyous, like a homecoming.
