The moment Joe mentioned it in the sequel, I knew I wanted to draw this, and one whole month later, here we are…

I think of it as the flashback we didn’t get, the “more Joe and Nicky” we deserve, because by god, Netflix, I will do it myself if I have to.

“Good morning,” says Nicky.

Joe smiles at him fondly. Words are still a little beyond him. If he could speak his thoughts aloud—if sleep didn’t still cling to the back of his throat, the inside of his elbows, and the crook of his knees—he would tell Nicky that he is beautiful; that to see him like this, relaxed, drowsy, hair tousled from sleep, is the greatest privilege he can imagine. Instead, he shifts until he’s pressed against Nick’s side, nose against Nicky’s shoulder, and sighs again.

“We should just lie here a while,” says Nicky, and reaches to cover Joe’s hand where it rests against his chest.

Joe can feel the thud of Nicky’s heart, the warmth of his skin, the tiny rasp of hair against his fingertips. “Bello,” he whispers.
