When i envisioned this piece in my mind, it was whites and creams. But i thought I should try working with colors, so it quickly changed to greens and browns. I wanted a mossy look that was connected to, but different from the fabric triangles. I don't think it's done yet, but I'm not sure what my next step is. I'm sharing this because after having stuck all the fabric on, I realized the shape looks a lot like The Hermit. This deck is so wild. I've never used a deck that wasn't based on (or was the inspiration for) the Rider-Waite-Smith deck. This deck (The Book of Thoth Tarot by Etteilla) is believed to be the first deck created for the express purpose of divination and is extremely different from RWS decks. Also it's only in french 😛 Something else odd is that the entire deck is numbered, not just the individual suits. I did a daily draw this morning from the @arcanebullshit deck, and did a whimsical washi tape spread for it in my journal. This deck has been so wild for me. It seems silly and ridiculous, but I've had really great readings with it so far. The extremely unusual images speak directly to your subconscious and coax out some solid messages. I've been studying gnosticism this year and I downloaded a Bible app that lets you switch between translations (really interesting to compare the words used and the implications therein). It sends me a verse of the day, and this one really spoke to me. Whenever you find conservative "christians" who thinks that helping others (universal healthcare, housing for all, universal income, etc) is in some way wrong, remind them of galatians 6:2. [Also, from a gnostic point of view, "christ" is a concept, not just a person. Taking on the burdens of others is the law of the universe, of enlightenment, of oneness. It's not just what Jesus would have done, it's an essential part of the divine order, the geometry of this existence. I finally got my embossing too! I've been playing with distress inks and oxide inks and a couple brands of clear embossing powder. I'm looking forward to trying colored powders and clear inks, but so far I'm in love. I just did this quick little spread to journal over and the embossed elements in the corners give feeling of texture and dimension. Also, the embossing tool is essentially a high powered mini hairdryer, so it's been awesome to be able to try the ink and stamps so quickly and keep going. I absolutely love the George Eastman Museum. This was our first time visiting since the (STUNNING) renovation. One of my favorite things about the mansion is it's connection to death. Eastman shot and killed himself in his bedroom (first pic, now used as a kids area) so he could avoid losing cognitive abilities as he aged. A copy of his suicide note is on display in the house, as well as a piece of his coffin (second pic). I understand why some might find this macabre, but for me it's another strand of the human experience woven into a beautiful place. For the first time since 2011, @target will be closed on Thanksgiving. Other retailers (@michaelsstores included) are following suit. Personally, I'm not a Thanksgiving fan, and I think the phenomenon it morphed into is problematic at best. Still, I think retailers closing their doors on a national holiday is win. It's a win, not for the "sanctity" of Thanksgiving, but for workers rights as well as anti-materialism. This pandemic has taught us a lot, but one lesson especially pertinent here is that we have taken so, so much for granted. Many of us lost money, jobs, our homes, maybe even people we love. Knowing that, and still being in that place, we have to come to terms with the fact that we won't, we can't, go back to "normal." What we thought of as normal was harmful to so many of us, and it allowed covid-19 to destroy us. We have the chance now to rebuild a society that actually works for us, instead of working us into the ground. Don't go shopping on black friday this year. Stay with the people you love. Your health and well-being is more important than that cheap crap at the mall. Move away from the culture of consumerism that has gotten us into this mess. If you do want to buy gifts (which obviously is fine!) look for small businesses, and shop online. "But if we all skip black friday then target and walmart might lose money and close and that will cost us so many jobs and the economy will collapse!" That's ok. Societal change is not quick or easy. We are in an intense period of change right now, and we can each contribute to how that change rolls out. I know I'm not the only one frustrated by the lack of straightforward communication from our state and local leaders about the pandemic. (This picture is from the new micro cluster initiative. The cluster I'm in hasn't been updated in a week. Some areas haven't been updated since 11/6. What good is this strategy?) Back in March, New York was the epicenter in the US. Even locally there were news articles about using refrigerated trailers as temporary morgue space. I believed that @nygovcuomo made the right choice by shutting down non-essential businesses, schools, churches, and more, giving people who qualified for unemployment a monetary boost, and requiring masks, limiting social gatherings, etc. It was seen as drastic, but we got the numbers way down. We've had time to study the disease and we are now able to treat people more effectively. HOWEVER: we eased restrictions as the numbers fell and, guess what? We are watching our infection rate skyrocket. What we need to do it shut down again, ideally completely, with a full lockdown for 2 weeks to a month, with government assistance, a moratorium on rent, bills, and evictions, and additional care for our homeless populations. We aren't seeing that happen, though. Why? Well, I think it's partly because some of the loudest voices in this pandemic have been extremely privileged people who just want things to go back to normal. These people, the people who won't wear masks, who have to fight with everyone about everything, they are having their voices heard disproportionately. Politics is unfortunately always about keeping people happy so you'll get reelected, and not about doing the right thing for the people, lest they get upset. @nygovcuomo @mayorlovelyawarren @adamjbello @cityofrochesterny You have the power to make a huge difference in the quality of life for people in your state, city, and county right now.
