Review of Shadows of the Afterland
My name is Carolina, not Pilar!
Fun game with a very contained setting so it doesn't ask much of its players. Very beginner-friendly. Great music, fantastic art. I enjoyed a lot of the side characters and the peeks into their background / how they ended up dead.
Really enjoyed the lore of the Afterlife, their book clubs, their magical tools and how they ascend / get reincarnated. I love world building lore facts like those!
Saw another review that mentioned that there was no explanation why Carolina and Pilar's lives were so intertwined, which baffled me because I thought it was clear that Carolina was a reincarnation of Pilar. Yes, the timeline is wonky, but it's the afterlife, who really cares about that? Maybe it's just easier for me to suspend my disbelief.
Fantastic music and art design. I will say that I felt kind of juked from the cover art of the game and the actual pixel art - I prefer pixel art so this was a pleasant surprise, but the 3D design of the cover art made me expect an entirely different style of game.
In order of preference: art design, voice acting, lore. I think the actual plot of the story is not super impressive and it gets a little heavy-handed towards the end (I also thought it seemed a bit rushed at the end) but maybe this is irony poisoning? I also really liked how Damian was pronounced - because the team who made the game is from Spain hehe.
Favourite character: Emilia Velasco. Loved her and her bureaucracy, then when she turned out to be evil? Incredible. I support women's wrongs.
Favourite character design: No one stood out to me. Overall quite equal.
Favourite voice: GREGORIO. Love my advertisement hard seller ghost who died from climbing up too many TVs. What a guy.
Favourite part: When Emilia was revealed to be evil <3
Whimsical game with a lot of world building packed into it. Good for beginners to games, very accessible. Nothing time-based / animation based. I think the ending fell a little short, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
