I, a hearing person who likes subtitles just as a preference, shouldn't have to read a subtitle that's obvious nonsense, go back a couple seconds, and listen again in order to figure out what's going on. An accessibility feature should not be the most half-assed part of a professionally made production. Scripted media has absolutely no excuse for not having subtitles or having subtitles that aren't perfectly verbatim. Professional captioning services should be ashamed of the shoddy work that they put out. Captions should be treated as a part of the production, just like filming, editing, audio balancing, etc - and anything that releases with missing or bad captions should be seen as unfinished

it’s simple: when I like an adaptation, everyone complaining about changes to the text is a whiny baby who needs to get over themselves and accept that sometimes you have to change the story to enrich the experience/work within the medium. when I don’t like an adaptation, it’s because nobody else understands the core themes of the original work and would be better off just creating a story independent of what they’re trying to adapt.

I think you're right on the money! For what it's worth, there is a non-Forester "official biography" of Hornblower (which apparently led to a misconception that Captain Hornblower was a real historical figure) that takes an "official" stance on what happened to Sawyer. It's essentially a published work of fanfiction, so I'd hesitate to call it canonical, but the information in that biography does align with your observations about Sawyer's injuries and claims of being pushed, as well as with the fact that Horatio is silhouetted in the light of the open hatchway as Sawyer falls.
